Why are Sci-Fi movies so generic nowadays?

Recently there have been a bunch of Sci-fi movies coming out.

I am a Sci-Fi fan, yet I find myself wondering why these moves are so generic.
Sci-Fi movies that have come out recently just keep recycling stuff we have already seen in the 70's.

In my opinion there are so many wild and interesting ideas that we could explore, and nowadays we have the money and technology to do it. Yet Hollywood just keeps recycling the same concepts.

Sorry if this rant is a little unclear, just wanted to put my thoughts out there.

Movie sci-fi has lagged far behind written sci-fi in my opinion. There are stories from the 1940's that are more advanced than most of today's movies.

But there's a good reason for that -- books and stories could rely on a market of solely SF fans. Movies have to bring in way more people than that.

Because most rely on the sci-fi channel and they aren't in demand.

My favorite sci-fi movies come from the 70's, 80's, 90's and some from the 00's. I adore Sci-Fi but modern-day sci-fi films annoy me. They have NO a soul

Not sure if alien contact movies count here, but...I've enjoyed a few that I thought were a bit different. I liked Arrival with Amy Adams, Jeremy Renner and Forrest Whittaker. I liked Epoch with David Keith and Stephanie Niznik.

I'd blame lack of creativity on behalf of the idiots in Hollywood, and refusing to take a risk with any new material, or material that has been mostly ignored for decades. There are a lot of great sci-fi novels that still have not seen the light of day on the big or the little screen that could have been very entertaining; but with the way Hollywood is right now, I would not want any of those idiots within 500 light years of some of these great books.
