What was the best film you watched this week? (11/06/2018 - 17/06/2018)

The way this works is that you post a review of the best film you watched this week. It doesn't have to be a new release, just any film you have seen over the last seven days that you feel is worth talking about. NO TV SHOWS!

I guess Insidious: The Last Key (2018) would be the best for that time period 6/10. Its another prequel to the first two Insidious films that centers around Elise's character and including a look into her past and an evil she brings into the world. The film is as good as the third one and is entertaining enough. Its biggest flaw is the same as the third. Elise is a good supporting character, but makes kind of a bland lead character. It could be the actress or the character but large doses of Elise just doesn't work as well as she did as a supporting character in the first two films. The story resolves well and the ending seems to indicate it may be the last of the Insidious films.

Split (2016) -- I've been wanting to see this for awhile, finally got my opportunity and yes, I enjoyed it. I'm planning on rewatching it this week end to get a better appreciation of it, spot things I previously missed. It reminded me very much of a book I read, The Minds of Billy Milligan, a true story of an actual multiple personality case that was legally historic. James McAvoy was incredible with his performance. There were scenes where he displayed such nonverbal intensity, he was actually able to make large veins bulge out on his forehead. One of Shyamalan's better ones.

Game Night – pleasant surprise sums up this film perfectly. It has all the expected dramatic and comedic trappings of a one-night thrill-ride type of film, but what really sets it apart are the quiet moments and how well it executes its comedy within each one. Jesse Plemons is an absolute highlight and brings most of the unpredictability and laughs, while the main characters’ friends are probably the film’s only downfall. 7/10.
