Not a good film View all posts >

I know people like it, and frankly I’m surprised. I couldn’t believe I saw an 85% and 8.5 rating for it. I enjoyed the characters themselves but I wish the story wasn’t reliant on them carrying the film. I felt the film dragged with irrelevant details which took away from awesome chemistry between Brad and Leo. The film just has a lot of filler, and could easily be under 2 hours and far more enjoyable. The pacing was simply unbearable. You certainly don’t need 2 hours and 45 minutes to understand these two guys. I agree about the performances, Brad and Leo were great. Interesting opinion, I just disagree with the various story lines. I didn’t feel like there was enough content to warrant there being multiple story lines. We get a solid 15+ minutes of Margot Robbie playing Sharron Tate, and even the guy playing Roman Polanski gets legit screen time yet I feel like their characters would have been better suited to be background characters - maybe show them once at the beginning but then don’t show them again until the end, only reference them through other characters. The fact that we got so much screen time from Robbie felt pointless to me, and didn’t seem to go anywhere. As for the story lines with Brad and Leo’s characters, I felt like there was a decent idea there that could have been executed far better. 2 hours was not needed to explore the dynamics of each character, when you could have easily done the same in an hour and come out with a much more concise film. The similarity with Resevoir dogs is that it’s a simple story but it relies on its simplicity to have fun. That was what I came out of Once Upon A Time...wishing I had got, a more coherent and better paced movie. The idea was solid, just poorly executed because Tarentinos ego couldn’t tell that at least 50% of the film is unnecessary and excessive (and not good like in the Wolf of Wall Street.) It pains me to type this because it’s the only movie I’ve been excited to see since Hereditary and 3 Billboards. I tried to latch onto the positives of the movie which were the costumes, set and acting from Brad and Leo. Those aspects of the film were phenomenal. Unfortunately that’s all I took away from it. Which I can’t stand, but obviously if I disliked this Tarentino film then I must be a marvel fan right? That’s a great analysis of the final scene, displaying the duality of the two characters and how their fates differed at the end. This was an extremely disappointing film in my opinion, so I agree with you in that sense. I thought the acting was great, the directing was well done, the set and costumes were awesome, but the overall concept of the film seemed so overdrawn and unnecessary. I understand what Tarentino was going for, in this human epic about character redemption but it all felt way beneath him as a film maker. The idea isn’t terrible, I just felt the execution was lacking in every way possible. The acting was the only thing that saved it as Pitt and Decaprio are quite captivating together, and I feel like they alone carried the 2 hr 45 minute run time. The story and plot was not worth a run time that long, which led to unnecessary scenes throughout the entire film. For one, I don’t understand why Margot Robbie was even in this? Her character has literally no relevance to his story, so instead of giving her 20+ minutes of screen time, just leave it to the imagination. It felt like they relied on these big name actors to fill unnecessary scenes which lead to the final scene, all the while Tarentino was messaging his ego about his love of Hollywood. Just, obnoxiously boring and I can’t repeat this enough - unnecessary. View all replies >
