Hi, formerly known as HillieBoliday...nice to see you here! I am formerly known as AliciaHuberman, coincidentally enough. :)
I saw the exclamation point used during one of the film's trailers, that come with the Criterion edition, and was wondering the same thing. I guess in those days, being notorious was rare enough, generally speaking, to earn the right to use one!
That's a great observation. Thank you.
I prefer anywhere in 1946 to now, but especially Rio in the film. It was mysterious and glamorous.
I believe Ann was referring to Diane. Ann didn't consider Laura a problem because she was too much of a goodie-goodie. Diane was "experienced", the way Ann was, only younger.
I'm glad we're here!
Great point. Thank you.
She's a great actress and you're absolutely right.
Great observations. Thank you. I now know Stonington is a real CT town, but I thought it was fictional for the fact that she is, in effect, stoned. As I recall, Rock's character tells Jane's that her children reacted the way they did to him because he wasn't a "pillar of the community" as their father was. She is pilloried, as well. Her daughter speaks of widows having once been sealed up in their dead husband's tombs, and then says that doesn't happen anymore, to which Jane's character sarcastically quips "Well, perhaps not in Egypt."
Watched it for the umpteenth time on TCM yesterday, and that hit me the same way.
I think because it deals with conformity versus following the dictates of your heart and body. I could be wrong, but I think gay men identify with Cary, for those reasons.
For all the reasons you give, it's pure escapism, period. Good to have a go-to for that!
It's a doozy. : )
BB and C is one of my Five for the Desert Island films. I think Novak's got great chemistry with Stewart and I can't imagine anyone else in the role. Maybe it's because I'm closer in age to Shep's character now than when I first saw it, 30 years ago, but I find him every bit as suave and sexy as Grant and Holden would have been. A certain amount of boyish innocence was needed to convey his state of head over heels, heart on sleeve delirium, and Grant's innate gravitas and Holden's louche elan would not have worked nearly as well.
Not in a Don's family.
