that's why they set up a sound proof nursery. Wasn't explained in the movie, so imagination as Geff suggests is all we got. but we do have some clues: -We know the father was a tinkerer or sorts. -We know that they lived near running water, so we can guess that their power system was set up to be self sufficient prior to day 0. a) hydro (my best guess) b) solar c) wind we did not see any wind turbines, solar panels, hydro dam or energy storage location, but then we didn't see all that much outside the farm and their path to the river/town. When you say the "family moved a lot of their equipment to the farm at some point". How do you know it wasn't there at the beginning, at day 0? But overall yes I do agree that it does seem strange that they didn't want to move near the waterfall. MAYBE it took them sometime to realize that their sounds could be muffled by such sources. If we recall the scene with the father and son, it was the first time they he showed this to him... maybe he recently figured it out? 3 + 3B) The problem with "strategically placing speakers that are always giving off ambient noise" is that they must be turned on. The moment those speakers are turned on the creatures will investigate and attack the source of the sound. PERHAPS, there is a way to spread the sound or make it difficult to localize, like with very low BASS... however anything like this would take some experimentation with noise... which is dangerous. ah yes, that makes a lot more sense... I would like to see the scene again and see where the kids are looking. still I would say my idea that the monsters were getting better at hunting has some evidence (the racoon on the sand path, and this old man's group also being wiped out) Indeed, probably a specific time. But the kids should have been aware as to what time that would actually be at. Hmm when I go back to watch it again, maybe the date stamps will provide more clues. I think "suicide" is a good theory but not sure about calling it "premediated"... I don't think it was planned, but a reaction. I have two theories on this one... one is a little farfetched admittedly. First one is more inline with your suicide idea and I consider the most plausible: 1) The old man saw the Dad and Son (alive and well) and they they still had each other. Which may have put him over the top emotionally because he just lost his entire family. Essentially, just that seeing two loving people together overwhelmed him emotionally and he just lost it... and committed suicide in the grief. 2) Its possible the old man actually saved the Dad and son... I know wait here me out! So if we remember the scene where Lee lit the fire on the Silo and there were many other fires lit up in return (their community showing others they are still alive)... there were quite a few lights that lit up. When Lee's kids were up there later and they lit up the fire there were no lights that had come up; suggesting that everyone was killed and that Lee's family were the last survivors. If everyone was killed... it means the creatures were becoming more sensitive or figured out some of the tricks they were using or figured out their paths. Remember those raccoons that were scurrying on the sand path near the farm that were taken out? Maybe this the old guy knew that if the Father and Son continued on the path, they were going to get caught by the creature like the rest of the old man's family/party. By screaming he would have forced Lee to take a different path, one the creatures are not laying a trap on. This is a little farfetched because it would have made much more sense for the character to just indicate not to go in that direction with gestures. And the evidence that the creatures were getting better at hunting them is a little weak. *all you have to do is read the other posts.. There's no need for the OP to have repeat what people are saying quite frequently.* If there is no point in the op to have to repeat other posts... then perhaps the op post is pointless to you. I actually enjoy reading others opinions on material I am interested in and would be nice if people backed up what they said. *Their statements are not grand, sweeping, nor broad. They're just summing up what everyone has already posted. There's no need to spoon feed you for "evidence".* "This movie rapes your intelligence" and "plot holes".... that is grand sweeping and broad... *I'm getting so sick of the production company's marketers/employees/fanatics/debaters/script writers coming onto these boards.. If you don't like what the OP stated, or what others have stated - just keep scrolling to something that suits your tastes..* I am not in any way affiliated with the production company not that it should matter in a public discussion forum. I and many others enjoy discussions of films, especially with people who have different perspectives and tastes so I will continue to do that. If you don't like discussions where posters have differing opinions, then this is concerning attitude on a discussion forum. No clue what you are insinuating with the "cheap porn..." comment. Seems to be an attempt at an insult though... seem unnecessary and inappropriate. Lol this post is so ironic... a) Grand sweeping statement. b) Excuse for not having evidence. c) Suggests others follow a course of action based on a + b.... ...and then compares the movie to Trump's ... tweets or wits? either way, still ironic. 4) *sound-proofing* : wasn't just a mattress, they had to put stuff all over the walls/roof. I'm not sure its that common knowledge on how to sound proof a room properly... I certainly don't know much on this topic but I am not a musician... neither were any of the family members apparently. As Kurt, already mentioned many of your points are seem to be character decision making, and not "plot holes"; but I get your overall point that you think the characters are a bit unbelievable because their decisions are not congruent with the character personality/intelligence/culture/etc. But lets go over your points, I have a different perspective on a few. 1) *family grocery store trip*: the kids were very quite: they were moving around on their tippy toes. If you ever try to move on your tippy toes, you will see that moving slower is actually more dangerous, its easier to lose your balance... like riding a 2-wheel bike to slowly you just tip over. Furthermore, the parents were teaching the kids to survive, while many scenes might be classified as the parents being reckless, the parents had to teach their kids to survive in the world without them because they could die at any moment. 2) *Living near the river* : or the waterfalls. I think the main issue here is that all of their belongings, tools, food are at the farm. Perhaps they considered transferring all these things too dangerous. 3) *setting up speakers* : well they did have the fireworks set up. And they did have some sounds traps (like the alarm clock). But sure, they could have done more in this department. Keep in mind this was what they had only after 1 year. And in a world where sounds kills you its hard to get a lot of stuff done 3B) *Draw them away from the house* : we do not know exactly how smart these creatures are, but these are predators and looked like they have some degree of intelligence. If they blasted sounds to get them "away" from their home its possible that the creatures would only figure out that they are being distracted... its a trick that can probably only be used a few times. This would explain why at the end of the movie the creature would not leave the farm and continously was hunting for them.... the jig was up. I'll need to see the scene again, but from what I remember I do agree with FredBurroughs... at that point they were all scared and breathing hard. Also at that point the creature was very suspicious of this house for past loud noises. And most importantly the creature was in very close proximity so was probably more sensitive to even loud breathing at that point. We don't know whether these creature would perceive the sound of a turbine as "unnatural". The sound of a turbine and a waterfall may be just as natural to these creatures. Because we weren't given to much information there is a lot of assumptions here, but I would assume they are only interested in organic life that produces sound. Complete speculation... but I would assume that a creature like this may be attracted to a windmill farm... attack a few turbines and realize that there is no organic life/material and leave it be... much like the would eventually leave the waterfall alone... 12) I was confused on this as well at the time. I assume when the creature was looking for the sources of sound he cut through a water providing pipe that was probably supplying the house... maybe on the second floor? 8) the large the noise the more that come, the more they will hunt that area. Fortify with what? we are not sure what material these guys can or can't break though.... Not sure what the purpose is of attracting more of them. 9) The dad didn't want his kid to have a toy that was designed to simulate flying... what if the kids wants to throw it to see it will fly. The toy was too risky and the dad saw this as too risky so he made his choice. Look how dangerous monopoly is... imagine a rocket ship! Well the girl wasn't smart enough to make sure he didn't take the batters... and neither were the parents. 1) I think construction without making noise would take much longer, especially since they also had to do everything else to survive (gather supplies food etc). Also we don't know how long they were actually making the room for. 2) well it seems that all the animals were in the process of being wiped out, exception may be aqua life but we really have little info on this. Yes they may have been at home in the water, but unless they are in the water they probably don't hear the fish. 3) Again we don't really know how vulnerable these creatures are without the help of the hearing aid It's possible when they are not being bombarded with the hearing aid sound that they are fast enough to hide in their armor between the time the a trigger is pulled and the bullet reaches. 4) Not disagreeing that parents seemed reckless here. But lets also consider the fact that this now normal life, can you really be on high alert 24/7, 7 days a week. There was really little difference in danger being outside in the town and at home. It seems a simple sneeze or stumble may mean death... 5) Not saying a grain silo is comparable to armor plate, and infact we saw that the creature did have trouble even with an old pickup truck (but it may have been just testing the defenses). We really really don't know how modern military weapons would have stacked against these creatures and we don't know how many of the creatures there were during the main invasion: a) its possible there were 10 billion of these things... blackhawks are no good when the air bases are destroyed and cannot refuel/resupply/rest pilots. And if the whole world got wiped out we must assume there were infact many... the question is how many. b) its possible that without the hearing aid attack, these things can withstand missile strikes? 7) Not sure what you disagree with... more people does equal more noise. In terms of defeating the enemy, they may be unbeatable...? Yes we saw them kill one... what if there are 10Billion Very good point that they never showed us how they powered the farm. They did show that the Dad was a tinkerer so its possible he had the tech know how to setup such a large system, and maybe had it setup prior to the alien invasion? Could also be a nearby wind farm. There were rivers in the area, maybe they were on hydro dam ? We know the creatures will leave consistent sounds alone if they are not organic... for example they do not constantly attack the waterfalls. They seem to accept it as part of the environment, same could be true of a hydro dam or wind farm. As far as light electronic sounds, whether from inverters or monitors or processors or radio, I think we just have to assume they were either too low in amplitude or the wrong frequency for these monsters. what scene(s) imply that they can hunt by sight? I saw some indication of hunt by smell (maybe blood) in the scene where the Mom steps on a nail and it seems to follow her around the house and the creature was making some sounds that maybe was sniffing... I agree with orangeflava.. the creatures investigate any new noise that is made and will try to destroy it. What did surprise me is they didn't spend more time at the falls. Seemed like a good place to give birth and raise a crying baby... but I guess they thought that their sound proof room was a better plan. 5) Military was likely over-run. There were newspaper reports meaning that the invasion/attack did take at least days? weeks? maybe even months? However we do not know really how many of these creatures there were and how quickly things escalated : sure there may have only been a few dozen in this rural area... but higher populated areas may have been hit with much larger numbers. We saw a creature tear through a grain silo with ease, its possible that it wouldn't have much trouble going through modern military vehicles. 6) The only time we saw a shotgun be effective was when the creature was being hit with the high frequency sound. There is a note on the wall "armoured?". In a normal state these creatures are likely not vulnerable to shotguns or even heat seeking missiles? 7) When you bring people together you multiply the risk of conflict and/or noise. The larger the community, the more likely there will be noise and result in everyone's demise. These scenes with the light were really symbolic of people wanting to be together and forming communities but knowing that it would also be far to dangerous. A small hope of light. 8) The creatures destroyed anything that made sound, so if you turned on the fire siren it would only last 10 seconds. 9) I guess thats why they were making the sound proof room 10) so your question #10b question answers your question #10a: why the parents wouldn't let the kid have the shuttle without the batteries answers your first question. The daughter didn't see any danger of the space shuttle without batteries, but the parents understood that children are curious and the boy may someday find batteries and want to put them into the shuttle(too risky)... this happened rather quickly. Indeed, going back to your question 4.. you would expect one parent to lead and one to follow to prevent this kind of stuff... but I guess we can chalk that up to bad decisions be people under duress. 11) no ideas... yet! 1) Seems like there are a few factors here. a) they showed a scene where they were still working on it, it was recently finished b) they weren't sure it would work... c) you are trapped down there, so you cannot escape when one does get in... and one did.. 2) Well fish are quite in the water and would be masked by rapids. I assume you are referring to the animals living in their house (I think they were raccoons?). Whatever it was it was probably a very quite animal that does hibernate in the winter... and just got lucky over 6 months? This may also be explained that for the first year or so of this alien attack the aliens may have been going after louder sounds, when there were more humans and larger animals. Because there were fewer humans now and less sound, smaller sounding animals would now be at higher risk. 3) a) The shotgun would be a death sentence. As we saw in the final scene as soon as it is fired...they will swarm. b) The creatures were armored and in most cases the shotgun I believe would have been ineffective. The hearing aid seems to have made their vitals vulnerable for a shotgun blast. 4) Indeed the Mom shows regret later in the movie that the child was not being carried. But also, the parents were preparing the kids to survive on their own. And really the kid is not much safer at home than they are out their in the open world. Really, anywhere in the world you make a sound it was going to end fatally. So what do you think is better, keep a kid locked up and bored all day(boredom leads to bad decisions)... or take them out and teach/coach them to live in this new world.
