A rose by any other name....
Every time.
Not being a JW fan generally, aside from his much earlier John Ford worth, I can totally see that.
Wayne is no longer the icon he once was. He didn't serve in his war, but made a career of flag-waving, jingoism after, hyping the Vietnam War, and showing himself to be a white supremacist. He was, in my book, a phony self-righteous domineering bore.
As for that role, playing a curmudgeon obviously came easy to him. JB is much more my style, as a (highly versatile) actor, and human being. The whole family were great, but esp. him.
I'm not a big fan of either that or True Grit because they are either straight lifts of a pre-existing novel, or a remake.
The ones they write are the ones that grab me.
The Coen Bros - literally the best in class, immense catalog of great films.
My top 3 :
A Serious Man
The Ballad Of Buster Scruggs
Miller's Crossing
I thought The Beverly Hillbillies was art. Esp. the music. But also the acting, characters, sets, plots, the silly wit of it all - eating off the pool table, calling the pool the cee-ment pond, eating possum stew, Ellie May getting dolled up, Jethro aspiring to be a brain doctor, or a double-nought agent, greedy Mr. Drysdale, awkward Ms. Jane, the whole dang crew.
Same w/ Green Acres, The Andy Griffith Show, Sanford & Son, Cheers, Seinfeld, Curb, etc. - all of it art.
This will be a time for retribution :)
True. Religion (superstition/mystery cults) never fares well in any strenuous discussion, relying ultimately always upon some combination of sophistry &/or appeal to authority. That's a keen take.
Some very solid early albums, but DSOTM is an album for the ages. I liked Animals, after, but that's about it.
Melt-on is posing as a straight fellow right now - does that count ?
His work is littered with rape scenes. I think Straw Dogz & Alfredo are masterpieces. But he was certainly a misogynist.
It’s not bullshit at all. He’s simply being honest. He’s right, too. Are QT’s films ‘derivative’ ? Hardly.
"I steal from every single movie ever made. I love it - if my work has anything it's that I'm taking this from this and that from that and mixing them together. If people don't like that, then tough titty, don't go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal; they don't do homages."
QT
He can say it, but I don't believe it. :)
Heard it also about Stallone. Fuck 'em all, let Satan sort them out.
There's a lot of inventions (speaking culturally) I wish hadn't been invented. All this preening, sing-song singing, rapping, over-the-top on everything, super-hero universes stuff - I personally could do without.
A little class & restraint, wit, under-statement goes a much longer way - w/ me.
Talk to me when you've succeeded in shutting down TASS/FauxSnooze, etc. You nuts are the ones living in big_brother_land.
A Hole Lotta Snowflakin' goin' on.
Elon and the Trumptards want to turn the entire non-MAGA media centers into 'safe spaces'.
Pathetic. Can't STAND hearing, or more important ANYONE ELSE hearing, alternative viewpoints.
WHAT ARE YOUSE ALL AFRAID OF ? PEOPLE HEARING ANYTHING OTHER THAN YOUR SHITTY OLIGARCHY-RUN 'TALKING POINTS' ??
I walked into a bar I had frequented, after a few months absence, and my friends about fell over. Somehow there had been a rumor that I had died. It was funny.
This fellow, Andy Edwards, a pro jazz/prog/fusion drummer of some renown, has interesting takes in general - here is his analysis of what jazz is, how it came to be, how it is regarded, etc. He's actually brilliant :
