Great Quotes By Directors?

"I want to give the audience a hint of a scene. No more than that. Give them too much and they won't contribute anything themselves. Give them just a suggestion and you get them working with you. That's what gives the theater meaning: when it becomes a social act." - Orson Welles

"I've lost all my money on these films. They are not commercial. But I'm glad to lose it this way. To have for a souvenir of my life pictures like Umberto D. and The Bicycle Thief." - Vittorio De Sica

‘I don’t want to hear it said that I don’t like women. I tried to show in Bring Me The Head Of Alfredo Garcia that I adore them! They represent the positive pole of the film.’

-Sam Pekinpah.

I always liked and respected Pekinpah. He made sense to me.

reply

He can say it, but I don't believe it. :)

‘We all believe what we want, it doesn’t make it truth.’

His work is littered with rape scenes. I think Straw Dogz & Alfredo are masterpieces. But he was certainly a misogynist.

reply

Bullshit.

He was simply a drunk
and it killed him. I know plenty of drunks, some of them are Daisys now. A drunk does not lie, drunks are incapable of putting together a coherent story.

You are a person that has clearly never lived with drunks, YOU are talking to an expert👍

"I steal from every single movie ever made. I love it - if my work has anything it's that I'm taking this from this and that from that and mixing them together. If people don't like that, then tough titty, don't go and see it, all right? I steal from everything. Great artists steal; they don't do homages."
QT

reply

That's a bullshit quote and an excuse for not being original.. He even stole that from a musician from the 1800s.

reply

Ironically, the end part of the quote is basically stolen: 'Good artists copy, great artists steal.' Usually attributed to Picasso, although I think I read there's no evidence he ever said it.

reply

That's the one. I read it attributed to many musicians from the 19th century

reply

Oh, sorry. I somehow missed that you'd already said that it was stolen... Yeah, I don't think anyone knows who said it originally. But someone must've quite a long time ago.

reply

It’s not bullshit at all. He’s simply being honest. He’s right, too. Are QT’s films ‘derivative’ ? Hardly.

"Tarkovsky is more innocent than me. In his films, rain purifies people. In mine, it just makes mud."

- Béla Tarr

“They are not a Zombies. They are infected a people” spoken with an Italian accent. :)

- Umberto Lenzi on Nightmare City (1980)

And I told him that I had a rifle, and by the time he'd reach the next bend, there'd be eight bullets in his head and the ninth one would be in mine."

- Werner Herzog speaking about Klaus Kenski
