I think Blade Runner 2049 is the better film. Even though I love the the original it's not without some fairly significant flaws in my opinion. The new film takes what was best about the original and creates a great story that respects the events and the aesthetic of the first film and expands on them without descending into in your face "LOOK! this is something you know!!" fan service. Despite being a long and slow paced film it tells its story in its own time and it never feels like it's plodding. The visual effects and design are as impressive as the first film and obviously benefit from 30 odd years of technological progress. Also it was great to see such spectacular visual effects being used to provide backdrop and atmosphere and aid in the story telling rather than just being used for lots of big dumb action set pieces and loud explosions. After many recent mediocre and disappointing sci fi adventure films I felt like this was the film I've been waiting to see for a very long time. I can't wait to see it again.
