It's nothing to do with teenagers being flaky about sleeping around. Plus this was the 80s, casual sex was fine but sleeping around in a relationship brought on a feeling of impending doom (to anyone other than the Billy sociopath types). No one really brushed it off like that slut in the Gilmore Girls.

This. He literally told her it was ok to be with Jonathan. I don't think that Steve knew about Nancy sleeping with Jonathan, and that was unquestionably dirty. But he realized at the least that she was "emotionally cheating" on him. You could also tell that Nancy felt guilty about it and perhaps wanted to bring it up, but didn't want to bring it up at time when everybody's lives were at stake. I guess the impending feelings of a brewing apocalypse sped up Steve's resolve, as normally somebody would be in a lot of pain when making this connection.

Ahh, got it. Still, part of the joy of IMDB was picking up on odd topics from 10 years ago or something. IMDB might have been looking at the wrong metrics of community and wrongly assumed that it had no community at all.
