I saw that too. Was waiting for him to chug it or take it out. Me too. I remember more of the US version, so maybe a slight edge, just barely. Kinda like an SNL episode. Mediocre mixed with some highlights and funny dialogue, as well as some fails. Overall, decent watch unless you paid theater prices. Over-dramatized for Hollywood effect. But decent portrayals of many characters, esp Garret Morris, Akroyd, Newman, Belushi and Lorne Michaels. Chevy Chase is tough to mimic, but the guy did a pretty good job. I went in blind thinking it was a documentary style with actual unseen footage, so I was disappointed seeing a reenactment, but the characters grew on me mostly. It had it's moments. Will be forgotten. 6-6.5. I didn't hate it, which is pretty good for the post 2020's era. I was hoping for something like seeing the stars and writers of the founding era, bickering over skit ideas in the week leading up. A24 has a lot of let downs. The only one that really found great was Under the Silver Lake, which I've watched a handful of times and purchased on DVD. There was one, maybe two others I liked, but the rest were mostly crap, like this one. I kinda hated this movie. I'm surprised to see so much praise. I found Calum annoying, a loser, and totally unsympathetic. I understand depression and loss, but I just didn't relate to this guy at all and didn't find this movie moving at all. Watching him dance was cringy and he strikes me as the type of guy I'd completely want to avoid getting anywhere near at a club, the resort, etc if he had been drinking. I was interested in the premise of the film, but expected it to be more investigatory and trying to piece together the past, solving some mystery by his ex or daughter. That part was left mostly untouched and rather subtle, which is fine, but I didn't feel anything. Didn't see him as a loss if he killed himself, sadly. It would have benefited from more scenes of his ex wife and adult daughter. It was trying to be too stylish at the end, which might have worked for a character I had any care for. The whole "under pressure" thing didn't do it for me. Great song, but clubber guys like this dude...sigh. The vacation looked boring too. This movie seemed hyped up by 2nd rate youtube movie reviewers who all threw in the same buzzword like they had a paid assignment to sell this movie and what points to hit with headlines like "this movie broke me" "I'm completely gutted", "what a beautiful masterpiece". Meh. I went into it blind. Only read reviews after to see what others thought. FWIW, I love slow burn movies and don't need everything spelled out. Maybe with a better, more sympathetic character it would have been better (like A River runs through it..self destructive, but at least charismatic). I just wanted him to get on with it and end it and roll the credits. You see, There's two kinds of people in the world. Those who dig The good, The bad and the ugly. And those who don't. You dig! I still like it. The score is amazing and good without the movie. Did you used to chew on paint chips as a child? Na. I picked it up a few mos ago at the thrift shop. Wasn't as good as I remember. Sold it with a batch of 50 don't need to own movies for $20. I concur. First time I saw this I couldn't stop laughing out loud (few movies do that). Still do. Not only hilarious and quotable moments, but a good story and great holiday movie. Top 5 comedies of all time. Also love Tommy boy. Groundhog day is maybe a closer comparison. Poor things The Killing of a Sacred Deer The Favourite Dogtooth Kinds of Kindness The Lobster Watched them all in one week. Started to watch Alps, but didn't finish yet. Audio was out of sync and subtitled. Another reviewer on youtube also mentioned something about destroying language (gaslighting their captives with changing meanings of words) and it destroys the persons character in a way (paraphrasing badly). But that is also a Marxist thing and someone on here said this was an anti-communist/totalitarian theme and I'd agree with that to a point, but it's more than just that too. There's a definite parallel with the dog training/child rearing going on and it's an absurd very black comedy/satire too. Like the Father, he can't give him the dog until he's completing all his training. In the few movies I've seen of the director, there is an underlying theme of challenging culture/norms/conditioning we all get growing up in society and it's interesting to see these characters journey/experiment without it or with extremely different upbringings. Most people miss that. They just see something off-putting and poo poo the movies altogether, because they are expecting something traditional. Pretty much nailed it. I saw The Favorite tonight. Again a movie the trailers and poster didn't lure me into when it came out (plus any poster that has the Lobster style motif turns me off..lol). I'd agree with the consensus here. Solid 7-8 for The Favorite, but I like Poor things more. That movie stuck with me more. Dogtooth will be next. next day I watched Dogtooth. Wasn't expecting subtitles nor anything else about it, but I enjoyed it overall. I think I'll pick up more on a second watching for sure. I can see why people don't like it, but you have to come at it from a different mindset. Ok, I just heard about Kinds of Kindness. Not on anyone's list here. Hoping to see it soon. Sounds like it sat on the shelf for a year. Seen it yet? I like Claire. Rebecca Hall too could have been good. Can only imagine the crazy psycho shit in a 3 way "love" triangle between 3 women. Would be endless drama and throat cutting. Movie portrayed that pretty well. Barry Lyndon is far superior and great. This is a bit of a different animal. Enjoyed it more than expected. Probably a 7ish. Barry Lyndon is close to, if not a 10. I'll forever have a new association with Queen anne's table legs now. I'm thinking her leg rubbing as well as eating, sleeping was her way of soothing her losses and pain away. Not just the 17 children, but also Sarah, her illnesses and apparent stroke, lost husband etc. But also putting Abigail in her place, esp after messing with her rabbit. Maternal instinct, dominance etc. I'll check it out. I know nothing more about it than seeing the thumbnail movie poster on Kanopy for awhile. I never made the connections to the director, but now I'm curious. 2nd one is partially true, but it's more than just that too.
