If you *knew* it was coming, then the questions are how far in advance? Less than a month than you can really only try to take care of you and yours. Longer, than you try to be a Cassandra and warn people but they would not listen. Its too far-fetched.
But okay, I'd have to move with my family somewhere isolated with water and stockpile non-perishable food. I means tons of food since in the Road, growing your own is no longer possible. And water, water treatment, and medicine. Clearly, safe water must be available. Then you have to defend the horde, which will not be movable. But, if enough time goes by, more armed and desperate folks will attack to get what you have and they don't. Matter of time. Unless, so damn isolated and stocked up that you live off the grid until sickness or an injury gets you.
The movie is bleak and depressing. So much so I could only watch it once and gave up on the book.
I was in college and 19 when it came out, early summer if I recall. It was pretty popular and I probably saw it in the theaters at least twice. As other noted, that was the era of the VHS rental places and it was a staple. Also, the soundtrack was pretty great and I probably listened to it dozens of times. Brings back good memories.
Good explanation. I thought the ending was a bit too surreal and conveniently/confusingly Christian.
I was maybe 11 or 12 when this came out and saw it in the theaters. I found it entertaining and with some really nice plot devices and concepts. But mainly, I think it is a (somewhat campy) product of its time, so the FX do not hold up well, nor does the dialogue or even the score, which is cool but gets droning after a while.
Great premise, quite a LOT like Disney's Black Hole if you think about it, but ultimately crap (well, mostly).
As for being remade, I'd see that as a low priority (so to speak).
Because it is a product of the mid-80s and it was a totally off-the-wall premise that was actually executed pretty well. For those of us who grew up watching it a LOT when and after it came out, it is still groovy and part of our childhood.
Yes. Flawed but very thought-provoking and "discussable". Hence my post.
Yes. It was intense. I saw it with good friends and I knew it would become one of my favorite movies. Still is.
