Society doesn't tend to show as much concern when a black person goes missing. I don't know if that factored into their decision, but at the very least they had an obsessive fetish for black people('s bodies), stemming from the Jesse Owens thing. I also think it's an allegory to American slavery (eg the auction block). It's a disturbing reminder for me of how some of my own ancestors behaved - the events in this movie are no more horrifying than the reality of slavery. That is what I find most chilling of all.
