I do hope reviving these old threads is ok.
I view it as a contrast: the slow paced, boring, careful and subtle intelligence work (set up a meeting, leave a signal, wait to see if you get confirmation, etc), and the violence that could spring up at any point (a soft-nosed bullet to the face); the violence destroying most / all the work done with the subtle approach. I love these titles (as well as the ones for TTSS).
I hope there are still people hanging out to read this.
I find the whole river camp sequence disturbing. I try to imagine what it would be like to live like that, and it terrifies me. Were these types of camps common in Germany at the time? Are they still? Shudder.
Something else related to stereotypes. At some point Toby describes one of the characters (perhaps Claus Kretzschmar) as "a Saxon... these people don't make any sense!" or something similar. Can anybody who's more immersed into German culture (from that time?) explain what Toby meant by this? Are there German stereotypes that apply particularly to Saxons?
100% agreed. The BBC series is the best that has been on TV, ever. Tied on the #1 spot with its follow up, Smiley's People.
Also keeping this thread alive...
Fully agreed. Boring, childish interpretation of an interesting story.
Nothing. They have no morals, that's the point.
Trainspotting was by far the best of the lot.
I was going to mention Brazil (as another piece of boring crap). These weird movies from the 90s have not aged well.
I asked because I used to believe he was saying "this is enough, I can survive on this while I wait for her", but some time ago I noticed the second "enough now", and ever since then I believe he was saying "OK, I better stop this hopeless dream". But as you said, who knows.
* SPOILERS *
At the end of this scene, the girl runs out of the house, kisses the guy, gives him a longing look and goes back; he turns around, says "Enough... Enough now" and leaves.
Is he saying "that kiss is enough for me to go on living, waiting for her to be free; I have a chance, even if I have to wait a long time"?
Or is he saying "enough of this behaviour, I have to stop, it is too late and I lost any chances I may have had".
Absolutely agreed. That would have made the movie much better. As it is, it is pretty bad.
