Hmmm, based solely on the trailer and clips from Moonlight, I trust that Ali deserves his nomination. I personally would not have nominated Ryan Gosling for La La Land. Maybe Tom Hanks for Sully?
I agree with Amy Adams. The biggest one to me is Sunny Pawar, the little boy from Lion. He was transcendent and made the movie as great as it was.
I think it's just a matter of taste. I had no expectations for it other than expecting it to be a well-made film, and I came out absolutely loving it. I found it fascinating and such a realistic experience, almost documentary-like. For me, Casey Affleck hands down deserves the Oscar. I also loved Hacksaw Ridge (unexpectedly because I had preconceived notions of its subject matter and problems with Gibson), by the way, but I absolutely despised La La Land. That's the beauty of movies; there's always some we love, some we hate, and vice versa.
Unfortunately, I haven't seen any of the foreign film nominees.
These are just my personal favorites. For reference, I've not seen Moonlight, Captain Fantastic, Nocturnal Animals, Elle, Loving, Florence Foster Jenkins, Kubo and the Two Strings, Moana, My Life As a Zucchini, The Red Turtle, Fire at Sea, I Am Not Your Negro, Life Animated, and all of the foreign language nominees. I'm okay with any winner except La La Land, so I know I'll be sorely disappointed Sunday night, ha.

For animated, I've only seen Zootopia. For documentaries, I've seen 13th and OJ Made in America. All excellent.
I've seen Arrival, Fences, Hacksaw Ridge, Hell or High Water, Hidden Figures, Jackie, La La Land, Lion, and Manchester by the Sea. I have every intention of seeing Moonlight when it's available here. I enjoyed all of them except for La La Land.
