BORING....................

Somebody, anybody, please help me understand how this movie could be so critically acclaimed!?!?! I mean, it is such a long, boring, treading water type movie. Casey Affleck is nothing special in this part at all in my opinion. You could have substituted 20 different actors in that role and it would still be a bland, boring character. I hate to bash a movie but it just wasn't enjoyable, is that what movies are meant to do, bring joy and entertainment? I am watching all of the relevant movies before the Oscars and I knew coming into this it would be a chore..........and I wasn't wrong. Out of the movies I've seen so far that are nominated for Best Picture, so far its a race between La La Land and Hacksaw Ridge, two totally different movies which makes it really obsolete who wins. I really enjoyed Hell or High Water but that wont win, we know that. I just can't see Fences, Lion or Hidden Figures moving me off of Hacksaw Ridge, which I ultimately think was the best movie of the year.

I didn't find it boring at all. Manchester By the Sea is a powerful, beautiful film with excellent performance from the cast. The screenplay is really well written. I didn't think it was too long and found it very entertaining, in a devastating way. I don't think anyone else could have played the role as well as Affleck. He deserves to win the Oscar for his fantastic, powerhouse performance. Manchester By the Sea is definitely one of the best films of 2016 for me.

I think it's just a matter of taste. I had no expectations for it other than expecting it to be a well-made film, and I came out absolutely loving it. I found it fascinating and such a realistic experience, almost documentary-like. For me, Casey Affleck hands down deserves the Oscar. I also loved Hacksaw Ridge (unexpectedly because I had preconceived notions of its subject matter and problems with Gibson), by the way, but I absolutely despised La La Land. That's the beauty of movies; there's always some we love, some we hate, and vice versa.

It just wasn't your cup of tea, so any attempt to help you understand would be an exercise in futility. That's why they make chocolate and vanilla.

No, not all movies are supposed to bring joy. Obviously. The fact that you need to be told that says it all.

It's annoying when people try to watch all the Oscar nominated films for the sole purpose of judging the winner because they end up watching films they should never be watching. It's almost like people showing up at Bryant Park for fashion week, putting on outfits that don't suit them at all and then telling everyone how much the designers suck.

Good point, meat.

You're welcome. :-)

Yeah it was well-acted and well-directed, I'm not sure where it went wrong, I think the screenplay was weak. I just never really connected with it, I mean I didn't really care what happened to anyone by the end of it and felt little emotion towards the characters aside from Affleck's; who did an amazing job.
