I really wish there was more activity on this board! OT but Soggy, about a week ago I saw one of the earliest eps of Three's Company and immediately re-noticed how dark and sparse Jack's hair was in the beginning. They truly did fix him up to be his best possible self a few years in and beyond. I already knew that but the contrast is striking. And if you see John Ritter in stuff from about a decads before, he looked even worse. I think everyone should fix him or herself up to look their very best - we'd have a lot more attractive people walking around and where I live, that's desperately needed - yuck!
Hey Soggy,
Are you sure he wasn't Terri's blind date? Cindy had said he was rich and besides..how would he know where Jack lived? Maybe you're right, though - I never thought of a different scenario! Anyway, that cop wa cute, but a real jerk leading Janet on like that.
Hi guys! I kind of gave up on this board for awhile and thought you both had too! I'm glad to.see you are both still around, although considering the last post was a month ago, maybe not. Am hoping so - I think our conversations are fun!
Chips, I love that episode, I think it's called "A Night Not to Remember," if it's the one where a drunken Jack breaks Janet's vase and concludes that something very different happened when the next day he can't remember anything from the night before. It's actually one of my favorites, I think Jack and Janet played so unbelievably well off each other. Isn't that the one where Larry's trying to console Jack in the kitchen and Mr. Furley overhears thinking that Jack and Larry had an affair? 'Three's Company' was so good at doing the whole misunderstanding within a misunderstanding, making it a truly funny show. Nothing was expected but laughter. These shows nowadays, I don't watch them. There's really no show on at all anymore for the sole purpose of unwinding and just enjoying your night.
Soggy, the episode where Janet liked the blond undercover cop was the one where the guy in the ski mask robbed Janet's flower shop. Jack told the police he could identify the man and was willing to help, so they set up a situation that put Jack at risk but allowed them to hopefully trap the robber who had killed innocent victims of prior robberies. And who turned out to be Terri's blind date. The undercover cop was supposed to be there to keep Jack safe, but they ended up thinking he was the robber.. Oh, I should have said *spoilers* but am assuming we've all seen all these episodes before!
Hope you are both well. Chips, hope your puppy is thriving and happy :) Amd hopefully I will hear from you guys again soon - it's been too long!
Hey Ms. Chips!
No problem about the book - I bought it at the book store when it came out, so paid the original price. Had no idea it was expensive now...that's kinda weird. The book covered a lot of things, discussed how Suzanne Somers' behavior (not showing up for tapings, show after show, refusing to accept her salary, sabotaging the others) nearly got TC cancelled. Talked about how excited they were to be getting Don Knotts when he first came on. About how they found Cindy and she was an NFL cheerleader. John saying how ridiculous it was that he was running away from Lana and that it was totally out of character for Jack to do that (I thought the same thing even as a *kid* watching the show!) They even interviewed "Greedy Gretchen" who I believe was only in one episode with barely any dialogue. The actress seemed to think she had this major part, but whatever. Point is, that book covered a lot!
Felipe, hmm, I never thought about him too much. The way he treated Jack always bothered me. Always trying to get him fired and ruin his life. Can't say I found him that funny, but he was part of the show, so...I don't know, he's part of its history, so I guess he's okay.
Jack's hairline looked like it was receding to me, at least somewhat. He definitely got a male makeover. Loved the lighter color hair on him and also loved his clothes.
I don't mind if you say their dates were losers - I agree with you. The undercover cop that Janet liked was kind of cute, but he wasn't her date. He pissed me off (pardon my language) when he was flirting with Janet and leading her on. It was obvious that she really liked him and then it was like "in your face" when he mentioned his wife to her. I thought it was funny when she whacked him over the head with the pan again, he deserved it! Seeing as the entire show was farce, these crazy situations were fabulous fun to watch!
Looks like it's just the three of us for now. That's okay. I'm enjoying these conversations with the two of you. :)
Soggybottom, do you go to IMDB Archives now? I haven't had a chance to visit there, but will try to do that today. Yes, I tend to talk (or in situations such as these, write) a lot. Discussions are great and I love communicating with peope, sharing thoughts and memories.
These boards are absolutely dead. Am hoping they pick up or catch on but...not sure they will. Too bad, because discussing shows I love is a great way for me to unwind and I love reading about everyone else's thoughts on them. Here's to keeping this site alive....!
That was weird! I started writing this whole long response (hey, this is me we're talking about - what did you expect?) and it just deleted itself out of nowhere! I'm too tired to go into all the things in the previous "ghost-post," but I will mention that I have recently taken up indoor gardening and plant care, although no ferns have passed over my threshold yet. I am no Janet Wood, but am doing okay and - believe me - "doing okay" is incredible when taking into account the fact that for most of my life a houseplant would be dead within a week under my care.
About the photo, I wouldn't know how to upload one if you asked me, and would be worried that some of my non-boards friends would see it's me and what I post here. Since this is kind of a "safe space" for me, it allows me to be honest about kind of personal things. That said, I wouldn't disregard the idea entirely.
Ohhhh, I am waaay smarter than Chrissy. I don't know much about Suzanne Somers aside from what she pulled in the midst of season five, causing them to have to cancel show after show (by not showing up at the last minute 'til they finally wrote her out of the script) in order to try to get a higher salary than any of the other Three's Company actors, including John Ritter. She called herself the show's star and got such a big head that she actually believed that the show could not go on without her. That's the blessing in disguise I was referring to in another thread when I mentioned that Somers did the show a huge favor and allowed new life to be breathed into it. Personally, I don't think it would've lasted many more seasons had she stayed on board. It certainly wouldn't have changed the way it needed to in order to have the later humor and situations that took place. IMHO, it allowed Jack and Janet to really shine and their blonde roommates were fantastic side players.
Obviously, I'm just rambling on now and not making sense. Am really trying to keep these boards going!
Soggybottom, I'd date Jack in a heartbeat..especially later in the series. This would probably be good for a whole new thread, but I've noticed how people talk a lot about the changes in Janet & Chrissy, both appearance- and personality-wise, but not the changes in Jack. In the beginning, Jack was a little less fun and not quite as warm as he was later on. He showed what a sensitive, sweet guy he was in the later seasons. And his appearance changed A LOT. This may sound harsh and I hope it doesn't but...Jack looked like his hairline was receding quite a bit in the seventies and then - as if by magic! - it's thick and gorgeous by 1980. Add the fact that he also grew it out longer, had it layered in that clean-cut boy way (which I personally love!) and lightened that awful medium ash brown color to a brighter and more flattering dark blond and he put himself in a whole different league. His clothing, too, got way preppier and nicer. No one I know looks or acts like Jack and I would be into him for sure!
Interesting what you said about their dates because I thought all three could do better. The girls seemed to get a lot of disgusting old men, awkward-yet-aggresive weirdos, or just complete creeps for the most part (although the guy in "Make Room for Daddy" was a sweet guy and that whole episode had me in stitches).
That said, Jack didn't get such great dates, either. Lots of women who were not even as bright as (early) Chrissy, kind of slutty, and thinking they were way prettier than they were. One exception (in the looks department, at least) was Arabella. I thought she was beautiful. Too bad she was an insensitive bitch, but I loved the way Jack handled that whole situation.
Hi Ms. Chips!
I haven't been on any other sites yet but am curious if there may be some site we don't know about that other IMDB posters know about - they couldn't have all stopped posting cold turkey!
The book where I read about behind the scenes trivia about Jack/John (and all the other actors/actresses in the series, too) was called 'Come and Knock on Our Door'. I forget who the author is (it's been years since I read it), but it's a very good and interesting read. There's a lot of information about the series and its players for the duration of the show. One thing I found particularly interesting was that Richard Cline, Don Knotts, and John Ritter all religiously got B-12 shots before each performance at some point, maybe season 6 or so. I can't remember if it was for nerves or energy or both, but they all felt that the vitamin shot helped them perform at their best. There are tons of little interesting tidbits like that throughout the book , so if you're a major fan of the show like me....I highly recommend it!
Hi again, Soggybottom. Well, being a woman, I don't generally pay attention to exaltata size, but was thinking in more general terms. Same goes for the voice/accent (btw, ONJ has an Aussie accent) - Olivia Newton-John and Suzanne Somers didn't sound alike, there was something more about their faces (and maybe general body type) that look similar to me. And I'm also not talking about the way Olivia looked in 'Grease'. Much more the way she looked in Xanadu as being comparable to early Chrissy.
Finally, the other reason I mentioned this is because I've been compared to the early version of Chrissy and would prefer to look like Olivia Newton-John! Then again, I have been compared to a million different celebrities over the years because that's what people do, especially when they see a pretty face. Hope that doesn't come across as conceited - it wasn't meant to.
Hey Soggy & Chips. Guess it's just the three of us for now!
To Ms. Chips: I read that John Ritter said that he was coming home to his wife with bruises all the time due to the effort he put into his physical comedy. It looked real because it was!
Soggybottom: I would say "exaltatas" too and am certain that was what creepy Greg meant also!
Hey, Soggybottom! Nothin' much doing at this website - I wonder where most of the IMDB posters went? Anyway, this site is giving me a pain! It wouldn't allow me to sign up under my own user name! I had to create a new account and capitalize the "s" in sister, but I wonder if I will have trouble signing in again next time.
Anyway, although the question wasn't directed at me, I'll answer my opinion to it: Chrissy flat-out RUINED S4 of 'Three's Company'! I actually thought her bizarre looks and behavior were so bad that they even detracted from the *others'* performances - the show from that season is nearly unwatchable for me. I remember seeing comments on IMDB (and I apologize in advance if you're one of them and I offend you) saying that Chrissy started off "reasonably intelligent" or even just "intelligent" and later became dumb. Ummm, no. Chrissy was never intelligent nor was she supposed to be - that was the joke (that was later taken wayyy too far). She was incredibly naive and not too bright from the very beginning. The fact that some people didn't seem to realize this may be part of the reason why they made no mistake of Chrissy's being a moron later on. Also, I read that Suzanne Somers wanted credit for the character's horrific change - who would want credit for THAT?! - and that she fashioned the Chrissy character around young children and dogs. I really don't know, but agree that her horrible behavior that nearly got the show cancelled was a blessing in disguise because it enabled the producers, directors or whoever to breathe new life into the show. The Jack-Janet-Terri-Larry-Furley episodes were always my favorites :)
I will get to the exaltata (correct sp, with exaltatus being the other correct spelling, as there seems to be no Latin plural form..) under the "Early Chrissy - Olivia" post later.
P.S. I actually watched that episode a second time on Youtube because of the fantastic play on words ("Put them in the window and they'll grow." !!!) :D
