1. These kids basically LIVE in these places more so than they do at home... Of course they're pretty comfortable by now... 2. I think it's far more likely that the reason these characters spent a noticeable amount of time in their undies was because the Hollywood Pedos of the 80s/90s really just wanted some material to get off with later on.

That's a given... But in terms of who made it... Chbosky is WHY it's such a great movie. He's a powerful writer. If it had just been some unknown author, I'm not quite sure it would have been as great.

Actually, I'm gonna go one step further and say from the way he's acting, he's essentially "pretending" to be in denial of what happened. That's the only logical explanation to explain how he could allude to the fact that he's choosing to die as a good man. He knows full well what he did, but is pretending to live in this fantasy world because he can't face what happened... yet his memories still pop up from beneath a very shallow layer of "denial"
