as to whether I want to join Hulu for $12 a month so I can watch this. Reading the various posts, I haven't found enough pros or cons to make up my mind.
I'm also reading the book, and, as one poster pointed out, there is no one named Fern in it. I thought she might be Linda from the book, but no, because the real Linda appears in the movie.
The same poster touched on Fern having her whole town disappear, which is the catalyst for her becoming a Nomad. Fictional, of course, since Fern is fictional. But the town could be the one described in the book as the town of Empire, Nevada, a "company town," wholly owned by a Gypsum mining company. The company owned everything, the houses and apartments where the workers live and the stores where they shop. One day the plant manager called all the workers to a general meeting to announce that the plant was shutting down. Everyone had two weeks to vacate the town, meaning they were not only losing their jobs but also their homes at the same time. Interesting tidbit, because I didn't think company towns still existed.
