Why does the term "Uncle Tom" refer to a black who is a sell-out?
In the novel Uncle Tom's Cabin, Tom risks his life to save the life of a little white girl, refuses to whip a slave and as a result is tortured, then gives his life to protect a black woman from being a sex slave. So how is he a sellout?
Because he is a devout Christian he does forgive the white people who killed him, which I think is odd, but he is a devout Christian.
It's like people who use the term as a slur haven't even read the Cliff notes /Spark notes/Wiki/ etc. of the book.
