Lean into the absurdity of an Aquaman movie and have fun with it
Instead of going the serious-as-a-heart-attack route they did with Batman and Man of Steel, DC decided to lean into the absurdity of their character in the first solo Aquaman movie.
In the second one they didn't lean... they toppled the wall and crashed through. And it is a fun ride if you just go with it.
In the movie's beginning, Aquaman says, "My power is I talk to fish. Some people think that's silly." I mean, he's setting up the movie right there. His sidekick is an octopus, he's riding around on a seahorse, and even in the most dramatic situations, Momoa smirks like he's in on the joke.
It's non-stop action from start to finish, with 99% of it CGI fish and elephant-sized Crustaceans with Scottish accents fighting ghost zombies underneath Antarctica.
The cast is pretty much the same, but the majority of the movie belongs to Momoa and Patrick Wilson as brothers in arms. No, Amber Heard was not a large part of the movie, with maybe five lines of dialogue and pretty much shoved into the background the entire thing.
A random stranger's opinion: I went in with zero expectations and just hoped to have a good time, and I did. It's silly, action-packed, and knows exactly what it is.
