As the Marketing Campaign Builds....

....it will be interesting to see how Marvel/Disney adopts to the new normal. The global pandemic permanently short-circuited their previously well laid out plans.

Marvel/Disney was a juggernaut and seemingly could do no worse than "Good" releases to "Great" releases. They built up a world-wide growing fan base that affectionately clung to every word released.

That fan-base growth has been stalled, segmented across theatrical releases, streaming apps, with theme park tie-ins still suffering.

The anticipation for MCU theatrical releases as "Event" films has waned, and opening days aren't what they used to be.

I will see Dr. Strange 2 but probably not opening day or even weekend.

My fiance wants to see this.

Problem is she hasn't seen WandaVision. She has seen Spiderman No Way Home and I cautioned her about going in to this film unprepared.

She'll like it but she won't "Get" it.

I have this feeling that a portion of the mass audience will be in the same boat.

This is going to be interesting.

A movie should be able to stand on it's own. Except if they're obviously a part of two-part movies (one big movie separated into two releases.) Otherwise, "preparation" should not be needed.

We'll find out once the film is out, but I think the massive success of No Way Home bodes well for Marvel. It was released at the tail end of the pandemic, yet went on to become one of the highest-grossing films in history. I read that Dr. Strange has sold $42 million worth of tickets already, so it appears the film will do well. It won't make Spider-Man money, but even the fact that a D-Lister like Dr. Strange is so successful is a testimony to Marvel's brand.

Even Marvel's pandemic releases outperformed expectations, so I don't see reason for pessimism yet. Tastes can turn on a dime, no doubt, and who knows where we'll be in a year's time, but expectations seem very high for the coming Dr. Strange film, and even higher for Thor: Love and Thunder. It's still early to know what buzz Black Panther 2 or Captain Marvel 2 will generate, but as both were huge hits with critics and audiences, I can see them doing well. I can also see them failing if they aren't good films. That has been Marvel's ace-in-the-hole: they have not yet made a bad film.

I'm not a Marvel movie guy at all, and I won't go to the theater to see this one, but Raimi makes me slightly more interested to eventually check it out.
