Does anyone really care about this movie?

I mean I'm looking forward to it, but there seems to be almost none of the usual hype surrounding MCU movies for this one.

no

I mean, neither China, nor Hong Kong or Taiwan appear to – which I find all kinds of hilarious, to be honest.

I mean, what do you do if you expect to have a snowball's chance in Hell of selling a martial arts film to the very countries that invented the genre? Do you get a proven, tried-and-true director such as Derek Yee or Tsui Hark, who is actually familiar not only with it, but also with the specific tastes and expectations of its audiences? Nah, who needs that kind of trouble, amirite? Just grab some Japanese-American director with like three indie dramas under his belt to do it; we all know Asians are basically all the same, anyway.

It's a perfect encapsulation of the absolute mind-bogging cluelessness that seems to rule Hollywood these days.

I've never heard of the "proven" directors you list, but I do know that most of the martial arts films coming out of Asia are terrible, so I'm glad Marvel went with a director who has proven his skill at making compelling, quality films rather than someone famous for making campy crap.

Look at all the crap John Woo turned out for Hollywood as example A.

You don't know who Derek Yee is? He did the multi-award winning Protegé that starred Andy Lau and The Badlands' Daniel Wu. He also directed The Shinjuku Incident with Jackie Chan, another award winning film based on a true story. Those are fantastic films the likes of which there are no Hollywood equivalents.

Hands down he would have done a much better job crafting a compelling film out of Shang Chi if given the opportunity.

As for Tsui Hark, he has a good eye for action but I'll admit many of his films are crap. Looking through my IMDB listing, most of his movies earned a 4 or 5 from me. He did two awful back-to-back Jean Claude films in the form of Double Team and Knock Off, and also that paltry Jet Li flick Flying Swords at Dragon Gate.

His best film (even though it wasn't that great) was probably Seven Swords. Then again, compared to the way Shang Chi looks, maybe even Tsui Hark would be an upgrade over what we're about to get.

I don't watch many kung fu movies.

While I agree with you on Woo's Hollywood garbage, John Woo was never a martial arts film director. Also, Woo's China action flicks are gold so how does your example A even apply? (or did you not see any of those either?)

Those other directors you have never heard of are legends in the genre. What complaints would you have if they were going to be used as director for a Christmas love story drama? You basically said "I have never heard of them and their work is crap."

I guess a Disney martial arts movie is what some people want. What next? Sophia Coppola Space Marines movie?

reply

Watch The Killer and tell me again that his Hong Kong films are gold. :)

reply

You probably watched the dubbed version which ruins it. You watch it again but with subtitles. That movie rocks.

reply

I watched it in a packed theater in the '90s, subtitled, with an audience full of Hong Kong movie fans, and a second time at home, also subtitled. It's a cheesy, maudlin, schmaltzy, unintentional comedy. If Mel Brooks did an HK action film, he couldn't top The Killer for laughs.

Brutal!

OK, OK I believe that you don't like it. lol

reply

I have never heard of this movie or this character in my life.

reply

Well luckily, the MCU has done well at introducing audiences to new characters.
