This is precisely what happened with The Last Jedi as well, with Roundhead Rian Johnson's epic new trilogy still nowhere to be seen almost 7 years later.

What happened with the Dark Universe was unfortunate. It was a cool concept and I enjoyed Cruise's Mummy movie. Considering that the film made almost half-a-billion dollars, it really seems they would've given it at least one more movie before pulling the plug.
