I'm shocked they named the movie Gladiator 2!

Normally a sequel comes out after many many many years (for Gladiator that is 24 years!), the studios wouldn't put a number on the title but a secondary title like Beverly Hills Cop: Axel F, Top Gun: Maverick, Bad Boys for Life.

The reason for the omission of numbers is the studios are afraid the young audience (which is the most important demographic in terms of box office) would think "I didn't watch the previous one, I'll skip this one." So they attempted to imply "This is a completely new movie, you don't need to watch previous movies."

Does any sequel released many years after the previous one like Gladiator use a number in the title?

You make a good point. Nothing comes to my mind right now.

they obviously did it bc they can do roman numerals

regarding other long belated sequels using numbers - recent i guess Blade Runner sort of did with '2'049 (but not really)

Basic Instinct 2 (14 years)

Psycho II (23 years)

The Odd Couple II (28 years)

Hocus Pocus 2 (29 years)

The funny thing is that besides Psycho 2, the other two movies were famous bombs.

Regarding Roman numerals, I was just noting the demise of the Roman numeral the other day. When I was growing up, you still saw them often. These days, not so much. Do young people even know what they are?

What a shame we are descending further and further into ignorance.

#MeToo.

The biggest gaps that retained numerical numbering I can think of;
- Subspecies V: Blood Rise (2023). 25 years after Subspecies 4: Bloodstorm.
- Psycho II (1983). 23 years after the original.
- The Godfather Part III (1990). 16 years after Part II.
- The Exorcist III (1990). 13 years after the second.
- Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines (2003). 12 years after T2.
- The Texas Chainsaw Massacre 2 (1986). 12 years after the 1974 original.
- Scream 4 (2011). 11 years after Scream 3.
- Tremors 5: Bloodlines (2015). 11 years after T4.
- Men in Black 3 (2012). 10 years after Men in Black II.
- Phantasm II (1988). 9 years after the original.
- Kung Fu Panda 4 (2024). 8 years after KFP3.

Oh c'mon, there is no way you could've thought of all these off the top of your head. Must've looked it up.

A lot of sequels are VOD/STD as well.
