That race thing makes no sense

At every moment in every movie Sam has clearly been well-adjusted, fully integrated and self-assured as only someone who got where he is on merit can be. He is not naïve or blind. He is a product of a system that recognizes competence - not some "systemic racism" Mordor of America built for and by white supremacy.

That's just what's in fashion now.

You know how the Netflix "screensaver" shows posters of the various shows in their library? Well, a couple of times now I noticed that the poster they are using for The OA has the main girl and some black guy whom, having actually watched that show a while back, I don't really remember. Now that I think about it, I seem to vaguely recall the story line with him, but still, aside from Brit Marling the main characters were Jason Isaacs and Emory Cohen (and like 6-7 more people from the OA's circle, which he wasn't a part of), so why the f is that guy on the poster?? Could it be just because he is black? 🙄 Exactly how ridiculous are they going to get with this?

Okay, rant over. 😎

But seriously, I just looked him up, and he was in only six episodes out of the entire series, and he isn't even on the first page of IMDb credits for the show. What does that tell you?

This show has ignored common sense, the reality of the situation - for these characters - logic, etc. for the sake of it's agenda. It's making the characters do things that don't add up or are just plain hypocritical because that's what the writers want.

Correct. But I’m not seeing Sam’s merit based perspective under threat.

The race resentment tone only comes from Isaiah, and Sam only listens to him without challenging him because he’s understandingly broken. In short, Sam doesn’t need to win that argument, it’s pointless.

reply

Isaiah didn’t need to be in the show at all. He was only introduced in the comics way back in 2003, and he’s barely appeared since. In both cases he served no other purpose other than provoke resentment to a country that has done more right for blacks than the entire continent of Africa.

Also, it seems Sam, or the writers, forgot all about Obama, so their message that nobody would allow a Black Man be Captain America is an ignorant and out-of-touch with reality. Even if Obama doesn’t exist in the MCU, that line denies what real Americans have already achieved and are willing to do.

As the OP said, Sam, and Rhodey too, are well adjusted and recognized for their merits, so that defeats Isaiah’s whole point of lingering resentment as well as whatever else the writers had in mind about supposed systemic racism.

reply

I don't mind that Isiah is in the show, because Lumby is a really good actor - and this is no different - and it's a way to Marvelize real historical events, but the way it's being done is just really poorly thought out.

This show starts off with a black guy turning down the Cap mantle and another black man (who is a fucking Avenger and high-ranking military member) trying to convince him to change his mind. Plus, we've had Colin Powell, Condi Rice, Obama, John Lewis, Elijah Cummings, and several other high-level government officials who are black.

Isiah can be bitter, particularly against the people who hurt him, but he just hates everyone and that has no merit. "America" isn't the bad guy in this show no matter how much they want to make you think that.

reply

The most over used plot device to sell this systemic racism narrative that i've seen is the mean white cop randomly stopping black people to harasse them which was recently employed by this show among many others. Not saying there aren't racist cops out there but Jesus the way their portraying it you would think every white cop in a squad car was riding around with white hoods on their heads scoping out black people instead of catching criminals.I've seen this plot device so many times recently that now i just roll my eyes when a show uses it.

reply

This show pust more emphasis on that one cop, Isiah Bradley, Walker, and the government than The Flag Smashers and that's why it doesn't work.

I watched Synchronic yesterday, it had every single one of these tropes. 🙄

I am starting to wonder if there will ever be a backlash, since it's become so unacceptable to say anything about it.
