When You Come Up With a Interesting Idea...

...you only have a partial story until you come up with a satisfying conclusion. Reclaiming my time.

So it's not good?

reply

The problem is; it was actually pretty good...acting...suspense...mystery...but it ended kinda abruptly for no good reason, with absolutely NO resolution or explanation, and with nothing to speculate your own explanation. It was as if everybody said, "screw it, let's close this production down and go home."

reply

Bummer, perhaps they ran out of money.

reply

Yes and no. We know what happened — some experimental weapon/technology test vaporized everyone who hadn’t been exposed to the dolphin noise recording. The guy in the dark pea coat was connected to the experiment. The sat phone sent a message about extraction that was an ambush, part of closing out loose ends to cover it all up.

I agree it seemed abrupt, but I’m not sure what else was truly needed. They never gave us any other information that would make for a different ending.

The ringing phone was chilling, but I just assumed they were being tracked by the same forces who executed the pea coat guy and had managed to run the phone system.

This would have been a better movie if the story had more depth — they had been transported to some other dimension, some kind of supernatural connection, etc. More like Dark from Netflix. But all that would have been hard to do in the 85 minute runtime.

I'll take your word for it, mobocracy. But I don't think I'll go back and look for something I missed. Maybe I'm deficient and subtlety is lost on me.

reply

I mean I don't think there's any subtlety here or anything else that wasn't explicitly spelled out.

Is what's missing for you some end scene in some distant ops control room where the mission command is calling out for the survivors to be eliminated and/or the nature of the weapon/tech explained?

reply

So are we to assume Ray (red haired guy) was killed by the "extraction" team? The waterproof orange bag has evidence of wrongdoing if found.

reply

By him not answering the phone, the one on the other end probably thought no one was there after all and left, leaving Ray totally alone. I guess it's one of those endings that leave it up to the individual, which is not what I prefer. I'd like to think that he took that raft and was successful in getting to a safe harbor. But, of course, we'll never know for sure.

reply

I feel like the inside man would have informed the company that there were 2 of them that needed extraction.

reply

I'm not sure about that because when Ray asked him what he's going to say, Sean said he would tell the truth, that there were two survivors, as though he hadn't actually spoken to anyone yet. Remember, the radio hadn't been working until then. He got the message that someone would be there for him but he didn't actually have a conversation with anyone. Unless it happened off camera(?)

reply

Hmm I didn't remember that detail. Would have liked some clarity too.

reply

In thinking about it, the ending is probably one of those that's open to interpretation. Personally I prefer an ending that's more open and shut, but so many nowadays are not. I like to think Ray escaped, but I'm sure some will think he did not. I depends on one's perception of it. 🙂

reply

Everything in the movie is pretty cut and dry, except for the last scene. I'd like to think that by Ray not answering the phone, they were led to believe there was no one else alive after all and, after waiting a few days, he was able to get to a safe harbor on that raft.
