Black insecurity
I'm actually totally cool with having a subset of the MCU be oriented toward Black pride. I thought the first BP movie was above average for the MCU (I have it ranked 12th out of 29). But the way they dialed up their defensive wish-fulfillment here was just cringe. Wakanda is the most powerful nation on Earth. It's so advanced, MIT is equivalent to a "village school". Young Black women are the smartest scientists you can find--and not just Wakandans like Shuri but Americans like Riri Williams. Williams gets paid by poor hapless white dudes who need her help to finish their projects (I guess she's not big on academic honesty) and said to be way beyond her professors.
Not exactly subtle stuff. It doesn't make me angry, it just makes me feel sad for people who feel so insecure they have to cling to these kinds of fantasies. It would be like making a movie for white guys where they dominate the NBA and streak past Usain Bolt in the Olympic 100m finals.
