Saw the first episode... * Spoilers *
One gripe I had right off the bat, was it only being a 45minute episode, should have been a proper pilot length.
Other than that, I quite liked it. I'm not leaping out of my seat with huge appreciation, but this is a better attempt than Discovery ever was.
I stuck out Discovery for 3 episodes and then bailed.
Picard however, i'm pleasantly surprised and hopeful that if it keeps it up, we've got the basis of a decent series of Trek.
Obviously this has hints of TNG, but its following its own formula, TNG was largely episodic in nature, i.e. stuff wrapped up by the end of the episode, with a few elements of some episodes revisited (Q, The Borg, Lore, Hugh etc), Picard feels more like movie split into separate parts.
The production values are great, the VFX are great.
The title music? Utterly forgettable, I couldn't pick it out if you hid it in 5 other pieces of unrelated music i'd never heard before, massive oversight. Sure at the end it has a 5 second reprise to TNG, but everything before that, might as well have been John Cage's 4' 33".
Another aspect I wasn't quite happy about is how they've made Picard older than he needs to be. I understand that his attitudes have changed because of the failed Romulan rescue mission, but where is the firm of voice Picard we know? I don't believe he would lose his ability to command with his voice, he just feels a little too weak for my liking, and when you make him this weak this early in a new series, he ain't getting any stronger in the future.
I don't expect Action Man from him, but more of a reminder of who Picard is as a person, I don't think he would have lost all of that.
It was great to see the Enterprise D back onscreen, if only briefly.
It was awesome to see Data back even if it were only a dream sequence, they did quite well with the makeup considering Brent Spiner is 70 years old!!!!!!!!!! 70, WTF???
All in all, for a first episode, i'm quietly pleased.
