Atmospheric Creature Feature (sans the creature)

It's not a horror film (more of mystery), but it does create a mounting sense of dread. And it winds up posing a very philosophical question on the issue of animal testing. Definitely sparked a lively discussion at our house.

Question: Once Audry got back to shore, do you think she grabbed Emma and made a beeline for a trailer in the woods like Kurt?

Food in Films: Always nice to see some cans of 'Gansett in a movie.

Just watched this on Netflix and quite enjoyed this one!

I'm not sure it matters what happened afterwards, but it is a good question that we probably can't answer. It'd depend on how they choose their targets, I suppose. Of course the goal of the film was to correlate what she told Emma about animal testing with what was happening to them, and the McManus brothers unfolded that message very effectively, as you mention. Pretty darn clever film.

As a side note, apparently the lead actress is related to them, either married to one or a sister (my guess is married to one of them).

Yes, it was clever indeed. Went in with no expectations and was pleasantly surprised. Always nice when that happens.

In our house the discussion was all about consent. We've always tested on animals without their consent. How would we feel if the same was done to us? (Like the notorious WWII experiments by Josef Mengele or by the Japanese military at Unit 731). One suggestion was that testing should only be allowed on people who have given their full consent. Of course, in many cases, it might be difficult to find enough willing patients. So, you're back to the question of whether it's ethical for untold numbers of animals to die in order to possibly save millions of humans.

It's the hallmark of a good film when it makes one think about issues beyond the film itself.
