Whinging, politically-aimed posts from posters who aren’t regency romance readers, who would never go within ten miles of a romance series, who detest costume drama, who probably have a low opinion of Jane Austen (if they have even heard of her).
So why are they here? Why do they pretend to give a shit about this production? Nothing better to do?
People has the legitimate right to complain when woke-infested companies are trying to sell their religious woke gospel through period dramas or any other kind of media. Politically-aimed post are perfectly fine in a subforum that deals with a politically/religiously-aimed woke imitation of a period drama. Period.
I actually have, including your other silly thread, and if anyone is making an ass of themselves it's you. You're REALLY trying way too hard to convince everyone (including yourself) that this is a great show to the point of crying about other people's opinions. Woke troll.
Probably he doesn't even like period dramas. In general, people who like them are more civilized in a debate. They're not the "lol your stupid ridiculous roflmao haha" type.
You just proved that you’re trolling. Constant ugly comments and attacks all the time on the old IMDB boards For
Pride & Prejudice 2005
Emma 1996 (Meridian Television, Kate Beckinsale)
Emma 2009
Northanger Abbey 2007
Persuasion 2007
Mansfield Park 2007
Outlander
The Tudors
Rome
and especially Downton Abbey (ugh, the Mary vs Edith debates!)
I am not trying hard to convince anyone that this is a great show. If you believe that then you’re reading things into my posts that are not there, but you want to believe they are.
I don’t need to convince myself of anything because I know I had a good time watching it. I didn’t expect Austen-quality storytelling. I don’t read regency romances and so hadn’t read the source material so no reason to be disappointed with the changes. There’s lots that’s cringeworthy in this series, but I don’t care. It’s not like I need it to be something elevated that it’s not.
Just enjoying some lightweight entertainment after months of all-too-serious Real Life.
Yes, I made this thread to call out the trolls who like to stir things up on boards for shows and films they never intended to watch. Perhaps I should have just stuck with rolling my eyes and ignoring them.
Some people like to discuss things respectfully online.
Other people like to condescend, belittle, attack, make supposedly clever remarks at someone else’s expense, and spend enormous amounts of time trying to detract from another's’ enjoyment. To me, that is troll behavior.
How about your assumptions and accusations directed at other posters? Not exactly the behavior of someone who likes to "discuss things respectfully online"...
A reply like that is ridiculous, whenever watching a period drama the very least anyone expects is a level of believability, which is why they prance around in period costume and not Nikes or jeans for example.
A period drama is a drama set in a particular historical period, they are defined by location and history, and those rules are set in stone and for anyone with common sense and a grasp of history to understand.
Production staff hire historical advisors to give guidance to the director and production team, but it’s up to the show runner at the end of the day concerning how grounded they want their costume drama to be.
“You have to take your research seriously, otherwise there is no point in it at all. It has to be grounded in time, place and context”. - Hilary Mantel, author of Wolf Hall.
White supremacist hypocrisy is throwing a hissy fit over something as petty as this but having no problem with the Anglo European ancient Egyptians in 'Exodus' to give just one example.
It's a classic white supremacist "because I said so" hypocritical double standards to find the idea of Anglo Europeans in Ancient Egypt perfectly acceptable when it doesn't make any sense historically, yet cry foul at the idea of a black person's presence in Regency era Britain. Thanks for further proving my point.
Only in white supremacist fantasy land is Anglo Europeans portraying Egyptians (ancient or otherwise) the same as Koreans portraying Chinese. The idea of a black person existing in Regency era Great Britain is far less ridiculous. Like I've said, degenerate white supremacist hypocrites couldn't give less of a shit about historical accuracy.
Ancient Greeks no longer existing didn't stop white supremacists from throwing a tantrum over the mythological character Achilles being portrayed by a black man in a recent adaptation. White supremacists couldn't give less of a sh*t about historical accuracy or even consistency in their twisted white supremacist logic for that matter.
I don't care what race the actors are, and I love Jane Austen and have read everything she ever published multiple times, and I've seen most of the film versions of her stories... and some I love, and some I hate.
I can tell I'd hate this, because the ads show a woman attending a Regency era ball WITH HER HAIR DOWN!!! Which sounds trivia and really is trivial, but it's an indication that the production design people have absolutely no intent of doing anything accurate to the period, and that really annoys me when I see it. True Austen fans and history buffs care about this sort of shit!
I know what your intent was, and I don't insist that other Austen fans dislike production this for the same reason I do.
My intent was to point out that there can be more than one reason for disagreement in any given argument, and that not everyone who disagrees with you is as evil as these worthless fuckers who are freaking out because someone has suggested they pay attention to people who aren't lily-white.

Well said. Props for not shying away from the brutal truth of the matter.

I've reported some of them to the moderators. Usually the moderators do remove hate speech quickly enough, but this is a holiday weekend and that end of things seems to be moving slowly.
As for color-blind casting, other art forms have been at it for decades, and everyone got used to it soon enough. But some of the trolls here, well, there's a reason IMDB took steps to get rid of them.
"and that not everyone who disagrees with you is as evil as these worthless fuckers who are freaking out because someone has suggested they pay attention to people who aren't lily-white."
Lol, you're freaking out over a hairdo not being historically accurate and you have the nerve to call people who complain about the historical inaccuracy of the race of certain characters "worthless fuckers"??? You've got to be trolling!😆
It's because she has seen through the white supremacists and their transparent bullshit in that the bitching and moaning has nothing to do with them giving two shits about historical accuracy or even caring about the show in question but rather that white supremacists, the degenerate lowlifes that they are, simply never pass up the opportunity to throw a tantrum about having to see black people on tv and film, especially in this case where a black man *gasps* appears to be a potential love interest to a white woman.
You know very well this isn't about interracial romance or having black characters on tv. Now stop bitching and moaning you tantrum throwing snowflake troll.
Oh yes it is! The fucking snowflakes are freaking out because of the color-blind casting, and nothing else. I'm the only one who gives a rat's ass about other kinds of historical inaccuracy, none of the racist shitheads know a pelisse from a patten.
Sure, plenty of people can calmly shrug when they see color-blind casting and watch something else and maybe not be racists, but my general rule is tg hat anyone who comes to an internet forum to rave and rant about one show being color-blibd when they've never read Austen and would never have watched the show anyway... ding ding ding racist!
Hey, in the original trilogy, Leia was smarter than Luke, Han, and Vader combined! George Lucas gave the female characters all the brains, Lucas was woke before woke was a thing!!
No, really, that's what's right there on the screen in "Star Wars", if you're able to see what's right in front of your eyes.
Racist this and racist that. One thing I can tell you for sure if you think white people are racist now that is nothing compared to how racist they were in England in 1813. There is no way in the world a black man would have been let anywhere near an Aristocratic woman like Daphne Bridgerton let alone be tolerated as her lover. They would have set the dogs onto him !
Actually, rural England in 1813 did not have the kind of institutionalized racism that the US did, so if a black man with money, a title, and a socially acceptable background came calling, he might be recieved quite politely. And by "socially acceptable" I mean perhaps an African prince with money and lands back home, or a Carribbean "mulatto" with money and estates, or the English son of either, and letters of introduction from the right people. Such a man might have been politely recieved into the social life of a village, although courting the girls may of may have been a problem, the issue wasnt debated in anything I've read from that period. But I suppose someone like a Mrs. Bennett may have cared more about a man's bank balance than his skin.
Anyway, we opera fans all got used to color-blind casting ages ago, same for theater geeks. It's one of those things you can just go with, if the sight of certain people doesnt make you irrationally angry.
Some people see the casting of black people in these roles as preposterous and they are right. For people who have no problem overlooking it or just don't know any better it's not a problem. But it is setting a bad precedent because it is falsifying the past and this sort of thing is the thin end of the wedge.
Parity or equality to use the more common word is a utopian fantasy. It does not nor will it ever exist in nature. Life is not fair and people are not equal and no amount of rewriting of history is going to change that. Even if the Woke Brigade manage to force their agenda down people's throats it will only make things worse, by an order of magnitude. They, and you, are fools at best and would be wreckers for the hell of it at worst.
No response to my reflections on the historical stuff.
Because your automatic and laughable gainsaying for the sake of it didn't deserve a response.

Hear hear. But the trolls just look for any reason to call people racist because it's so in vogue these days.
Slavery was finally abolished in the UK in 1833 when the Slavery Abolition Act was passed, slaves were not a common sight in 19th Century Britain but very much so in the British colonies, it’s just fanciful folly to believe what you’ve written.
Slave ownership was never legal in the UK, just in some colonies. And the racial situation was very complex in some of the colonies, where there were non-white elites, aristocracies, or royal families, and they were considered VIPs even if they weren't one-of-us. So really, racial attitudes of 19th century England were a bit different than in the US.
To a 19th century American anyone with dark skin was automatically considered underclass, but to a Brit they might be a Maharajah or a Jamaican landowner, if they had the right clothes, manners, and letters of introduction, they could be someone worthy of social respect.
Edit: not that I know whether this show makes any attempt to work such social complexities into the script, I wouldnt watch it for other reasons even if j had that channel.
There is nearly always a lot to say but many people don't want to hear it. And calling something feeble if it is feeble is not an insult it's a description.
Most people rarely travelled away from their villages and towns in those days, it's likely the average working class Brit never saw a black person or if they did it would be out of the ordinary for them, there were only a few thousand black people living in England in that century, mostly in London or at country house estates, working as man servants.
Attitudes would likely change from village to village and town to town depending on interaction but likely be suspicious of any newcomer, and to be a black man travelling on his own in the UK, even if he were well dressed, and well-spoken and with a letter of introduction would have been highly dangerous.
I can't take an historicaly set book adaption seriously if it doesn’t take British history seriously. If the characters were orginally written as black it would be a different matter but they weren’t.

Exactly! Honestly once it's understood that you're dealing with some of the usual degenerate white supremacist suspects who are presenting a bad faith argument to dance around the crux of the issue, which is their pathological white supremacist angst/anti black racism, I personally find it's best not to waste time engaging them in their bad faith deflections and just stick to the heart of their degenerate motivations.
"but to a Brit they might be a Maharajah or a Jamaican landowner, if they had the right clothes, manners, and letters of introduction, they could be someone worthy of social respect."
Not relevant in regards to this show.
Color-blind casting for a show like this is not appropriate and I can't believe anyone truly believes that having at least 4 non-white characters and a bunch of extras in historically inaccurate roles is a case of "color-blind casting".
