Another example of flat out mediocrity

Upon watching the trailers, I was interested and decided to give this movie a fair shot since I'm a sucker for animated movies. Sad to say, though, that this made me feel empty. Like it's not an entirely godawful film, but consider all the potential this could have had considering it's based on the Journey to the West story which left a huge impact over the years, it just came across as a disappointment. The animation is very good to look at, the voice acting was fine for the most part, and the action sequences were fun.

That being said, this Netflix movie failed to make a spark. The story about the Monkey King is a good concept, but instead of showing emotional complexity, it just jumps off the rails and appeals to young kids. While we're at it, let's make it mean spirited and have characters that are the epitome of unlikeable. I'm sure it'll make this movie a bonafide hit. Surprise, surprise, it doesn't. Not to mention the pacing is so rushed and doesn't know when to have a moment. Even the musical number was unneeded and out of place for an action movie about the Monkey King.

If you want a movie involving talking eastern Asian creatures, just go watch the Kung Fu Panda trilogy. Those movies have way better writing, complex yet relatable characters, and better pacing unlike this piece of mediocrity.
