So Ben is in hiding

And he doesn't use the force so he doesn't draw attention from Vader.

But in ANH he has no problems using the force at will (mind tricks and such).

reply

Nothing ever changes. People remain the same their entire life.

reply

Sometime you are really dumb.

His motivation to hide from Vader didn't change. So he didn't use the force in obi-wan because he was afraid to get Vader's attention but in ANH he doesn't care, he freely uses it. Yeah, right. And you don't find anything weird about it.

reply

Stop doing somethings you did most of your life for 10 years, then try doing it. Tell me how good you are at it.

reply

Huh? What? What does that have to do with what we are discussing here (not using the force to not draw attention).

And to your point: he stopped doing it for 20 years and he was doing it perfectly in ANH (mind tricks, lightsaber fight, etc).

reply

He's been using the force the entire time whilst attempting to get in touch with Qui-Gon.

Yoda showed him how to do it at the end of ROTS.

Force distance sensing wasn't invented until Empire Strikes Back so he didn't need to worry about that back then...

reply

Hmmm, didn't Obi-Wan sense Alderaan being destroyed in ANH???

"I felt a great disturbance in the Force, as if millions of voices suddenly cried out in terror, and were suddenly silenced. I fear something terrible has happened."

reply

Sorry, I thought we were talking specific long distance sensing as per the OP's "doesn't draw attention from Vader".

Obi-Wan sensed a disturbance in the force yes, but the specific long range stuff, e.g. Luke / Leia and Luke / Darth wasn't shown as a thing until Empire...

reply

"Force distance sensing wasn't invented until Empire Strikes Back"

What do you mean by "distance"? The little mental tete-a-tete between Vader and Luke on two different ships only a short distance apart?

reply

Yeah. And when Luke reaches out to "talk" to Leia and she gets Lando to turn the ship around.

Didn't get any of that stuff in the first film. And then of course Rian Johnson upped the signal range to considerably greater distances in TLJ.

reply

"And then of course Rian Johnson upped the signal range to considerably greater distances in TLJ."

And Jar Jar Abrams upped the range again to include matter transportation instantaneously across thousands of light years in TROS.

It just gets sillier and sillier the more writers get involved, those who don't quite know the "official rules".

What was that? (I haven't seen TROS)

To be fair to Johnson at least he tried to give himself a disclaimer for having to follow anything, with his meta "Let the past die" line. That was his way of telling us not to get upset with things like force ghost Yoda firing lightening, etc.

reply

"What was that? (I haven't seen TROS)"

Rey and her friends were on some alien planet on the same day as a festival that took place there, and somehow, Kylo Force-projected himself there (like Luke did in TLJ, although solidly) and wrenched a necklace from Rey's neck that an alien had gifted her with, and then Kylo had the necklace in his hand... even though the planets were many light years apart. As an aside, the First Order were then able to somehow find out where Rey was based on a simple necklace.

Later on, Rey is on Kylo's ship when he's on a world far away, and they somehow fight long-distance with lightsabers, then a strike smashes the pedestal with Vader's melted helmet on it and it somehow transports light years instantaneously to where Kylo is, so he knows exactly where she is.

It really is that retarded and stupid, and it makes my brain hurt just reminding myself of it.
