Guy Ritchie by the number's Geezer Gangster Film
I wouldn't agree on the 8.1 IMDB rating for it, it's a 7 at best. Just feels since Snatch that Ritchie is playing it way too safe with the cockney geezer gangster flicks, would love to see him try and make a more serious gangster flick like Johnnie To does. I put The Gentlemen on the same level as Rock N Rolla, solid film but geezer cockney stuff really grates in the film. They don't flow as well as either Lock Stock or Snatch for me either.
But Gentlemen has some good performances especially with Hugh Grant playing agaisnt type and Colin Farrell in a small but fun role. I like Charlie Hunnam but he ain't no leading man, imagine a Tom Hardy or Idris Elba in that role, would have made it more memorable. Matthew McConaughey, was really massively underused for me. I liked Michelle Dockery as McConaughey's wife. It has some nice moments especially anything with Grant's and Farrell's character. But I'm sure going by the rating it's got that some loved it but for me Ritchie is really in need of a shot in the arm, something like a Layer Cake type film is much needed.
