The S3 finale was extremely disappointing

So they were hinting at Thrawn for 1,5 seasons now, and they wasted the finale on killing the pointless sub-boss, Gideon.

Let's face it, Gideon's arc was over in the previous finale, but they tried to milk Esposito for a whole more season. No offense to the man, I liked his performance, but his character was so underdeveloped, that every encounter lacked true stakes.

What was his evil plan again? Oh, he made some clones... which were destroyed immediately after they were revealed. Forgive me if I coiuld not buy into those stakes in 3 gorram seconds!

And the whole finale feels rushed. The whole season was about gathering the Mandalorians to retake their homeworld, just to setup that battle between the new beskar troopers and the Mandos. Visually it was OK I guess, but the character moments were so few and far between, I did not care who is shooting who in some scenes. Paz Vizsla was unceremoniously disposed of in a fairly ridiculous way. I mean the elite troopers did not really display any advanced moves, while strength and bulkiness was not on their side... still they defeated him, because the Plot Armor was revoked from Vizsla. A sad moment, where I found myself being sad at the poor setup from the writers, instead of the death of the character himself.

And then again, a rather anti-climactic death (?) for Gideon. I included a question mark, because Thrawn was not shown at the end, so... I don't know, can they really make S4 to be about Gideon (or a Gideon clone!) again?

Yes. Yes, they can, and they will. Or an even worse scenario could be that they show Thrawn... to be just as uncharacterized, underdeveloped and pointless villain as Gideon was. Yep, that would be worse, so I think that's what they are going to go with.

Couple this with the fact that S3 as a whole was - again - the victim of a phenomenon I call "video game storytelling", where episodes of a show follow such pattern that is similar to that of a detail-oriented player in an open world game. You know the one who does all the side missions and explores every nook and cranny, before advancing the main storyline. In other words, S3 as a whole was a drag - just like S1 and S2 before it.

Such a shame, because the Mandalorians have an intriguing and rich history, that could have been capitalized on. But all we got was two characters being worthy to lead the Mandos, and for an inexplicable reason, Din handed the opportunity over to Bo-Katan, and... that's it. And we, viewers are still waiting for the main storyline (Thrawn!) to advance. And it never does.

Fuck you, I LOVED IT!!!!! I loved the Battle for Mandalore, I loved seeing Din have his ultra-badass moments, I loved the fan service of the little droids, I loved having MG back in all his glory and awfulness, I loved Grogu's temporary gear, I loved that all my comments about where the series needed to go were proven correct, I loved the wrapup, and I love Din's new career path.

Yeah, the season took a while to stop plotbuilding and get into high gear, but I thought it was TOTALLY worth the wait! AWESOME!!

You'll just swallow any old shit won't you?

Only if it's a lot of fun!

Life is more enjoyable if you unclench and have fun now and then, you know, and so are fandoms.

Let me break this down:

I loved the Battle for Mandalore

Visually it was boring, emotionally it was not built up enough. When even the good guys are wearing mostly featureless armor, the battle gets visually stale really fast. I liked the Paz Vizsla scene visually, because the combatants had two distinctly different kind of armor, but the scene as a whole was a bit stupid, so... mixed bag for me.

I loved seeing Din have his ultra-badass moments

In the words of the Grogu-bot (IG-Rogu?) - YES, YES, YES... and that scene was great, because it showed some R5 heroics as well. Liked those parts.

I loved the fan service of the little droids

YES

I loved having MG back in all his glory and awfulness

Can you imagine how awesome his clones would have been? Mando and Grogu-bot going toe to toe with 10 Gideons? Come on, that would have been better than we've got. Also, I think they hammed him up too much in this season. I did not expect Gus Fring level genius, but come on. It was entertaining to watch in a "so bad it's good" way, but Gideon as a character deserved better after the S2 finale, he would have deserved a more grandiose comeback. Mixed bag for me.

I loved Grogu's temporary gear

YES

I loved that all my comments about where the series needed to go were proven correct, I loved the wrapup

I haven't read this forum until the series ended, so I missed your earlier comments. All I can say is - good for you! However about the wrapup: can you seriously say you didn't want to see Thrawn? For at least a couple of seconds to establsh him as the next threat? When I watched the last few minutes, I was like "ok, let's be done with MG, we need to see what Thrawn is up to already!"... but nothing was set up. It's seemingly a happy end for Mando, which is great and all (he deservers it!) but why bother mentioning Thrawn way back in S2, if you don't show him in S3 at all? Strange and disappointing choice by the writers...

Regarding the clones, I expect there are more, or are going to be more, or there will be hints about more. Because the idea is such a great way of defeating MG at the end of every season, yet knowing that mofo is always going to be back to liven things up!

As for Thrawn... yes! I can honestly say I don't give a shit if he ever appears! I never liked the books Thrawn was in, I though they were passable, but totally lacking the excitement and joy that made me love "Star Wars" in the first place (same for most of the fan-fiction books that got published). I still don't see why some fanboys overrate those books so highly and gush over Thrawn, I think MG is way more enjoyable and would rather watch the Moff Gideon Show than anything with Thrawn! I mean, I'm willing to give him a shot on "Ahsoka", maybe they'll hire an actor good enough to give him some life.

Edit: As to the Battle of Mandalore, you know what kicked it over the top for me? Seeing that old bitch the Armorer join the shock troops! That kinda made it work, seeing someone who has spent the last 30 years lurking in the shadows come out and fight for her people.

I feel the same! However I was excited about the prospect of having Thrawn in the show, because the EU was thrown out by Disney altogether, and they have a chance now to reinvent Thrawn and make him a truly menacing villain. That is what I wanted to see, not book-Thrawn (which I found just completely bland).

reply

Hey, someone else who doesn't gush over Thrawn! Great minds think alike!

And like I said, I could never get into the fan fiction books, even though I was desperate for new Star Wars material. The writers got together to create a future for the characters from the OT... that just wasn't very interesting. Marriages, kids, politics, BORING!

Moff Gideon, though, now there's someone interesting! A totally worthy original character.

I love Din's new career path.

"I'm a bounty hunter by trade" - he says in the finale. So wouldn't that make this his... old career path?

reply

He's changed his career path up a bit. Instead of a bounty hunter who'll work for anyone with the cash, he's now a bounty hunter with an *agenda*! And plot-valuable targets!

I think that change will do work very well in context, and will mean more screen time for that New Republic guy who told the Mandalorians about Navarro. I approve, I like him.

reply

He made some clones, which were him, plus The Force.

If he ever woke any of them up wouldn't they just use their equal cunning plus force powers too to supplant him?

Isn't his the dumbest plan ever?

reply

And we didn't even get to see it!

reply

Yeah, if MG and his Force-using clones all got together, it's make the infighting variant Lokis look like a church fete.

reply

It was meh and could of been so much more.
