We don't know much about the species. Maybe they reproduce by budding? So it actually can be Yoda reborn in a way and it gets around the whole Jedi not being able to have relationships. Haha science!

I'm guessing the Empire tried to wipe them out. If the entire race has a special affinity for the Force they'd represent a threat to the Emperor's authority. So there are probably only a few left, in hiding. With the Empire gone there will be unscrupulous wealthy criminals who want to capture the survivors and harness their abilities for personal gain.

I think they wanted to extract the midichlorians from the child.

Potentially to give to Snoke or whomever is running the Dark Side/The Sith to continue trying to achieve immortality, power, etc.
