Nice Movie But There Are Some Things I Didn’t Like.

After he told everyone the truth (well part of it anyway) I’m kinda disappointed that he didn’t tell everyone (well at least Ellie) the full truth. That theses songs were written by men who didn’t exist in this world but actually lived in the world he was from.

Ellie I believe would’ve understood & believed him. Everyone else? Hey it would’ve made him only more popular of a celebrity if he had come out & said that. Sure people might have thought he was nuts, but he would’ve been a lovable nut.

Also disappointed that in the end he didn’t find his way back to his (our) world. Let’s say he was listed as a missing person in our world & when he came back he made the news & when the cops & news reporters asked him what had occurred he then told everyone what happened.

Naturally this would’ve drew a reaction from the 2 surviving Beatles once they had seen the reports. Would’ve loved it if McCartney or Ringo or both had cameos where they came to visit him.

This sort of let me down in those regards but this is a nice little movie otherwise.

I thought it was strange that, though the Beatles hadn't been known in the alternate world, John Lennon did exist there. Of course, it's entirely plausible that there was only Lennon, (which would account for the lack of the group he had formed, the Beatles), but still it was a tad disorienting to have him there. Especially when he talked about his life and experiences, just as Lennon would have done had he lived.

Still, a minor quibble.

I think they're all alive, Paul, Ringo, John, George but they didn't get into the music business. In the parallel universe, alternate world or whatever he lives in is only slightly different but it changes the course of history forever. Apparently, the ones that are alive have the same personalities and traits as the ones in the old world, universe or whatever...

Pretty good movie though, I liked it.

I thought it was curious that, when he confesses, at that final concert, about his songs being written by John, Paul, George or Ringo, the Press and music agents didn't immediately launch a massive search to find them. And since that older couple who were in on Jack's secret did in fact find Lennon, it should have been much the same process to find the others.

But all of them would, of course, have been non-entities, so I suppose nothing would have been gained. Even when Jack meets John, he's not meeting "john Lennon the Beatle". He's just meeting another ordinary person, who talks about his mundane life wherein he met a woman he loved very much. Bit of sleight-of-hand going on there. The audience fills in the imaginary details.

Enjoyable movie, which I'll watch again, I'm sure.

"his mundane life"

Has sailed all over the world, lives in a lovely cottage on the beach. Yeah, mundane.

I don't think they believed him though.

Think about it.

If Adele went on TV and said she didn't write any of her songs. They were actually written by someone from the parallel reality that she's from.

Would anyone give a shit?

reply

They wouldn't believe him. We would believe him. It would discredit him to a looney, and perhaps even the Beatles legacy...

Rather he should have said,” The songs are not mine they are ours, they come from places and persons... they come from love. Our love. And therefore, I am releasing them all for free because I have no more right to them than all of you....”

Another important point that hasn't been mentioned is the fact that one of the things that made The Beatles so special was their musical evolution.

In the film, the protagonist is just randomly reproducing the band's hits, from different eras of the band's existence.

I thought the film was terrible. A cheap exploitative ripoff. As an alternative I'd recommend Blinded by the Light.

reply

But you are mistaken. It was a very entertaining, thoughtful movie, with excellent performances of Beatles songs.

personally I think it should have ended with another disturbance in the time space continuum that restored History back to how it was. However, Jack and Lily (along with perhaps those two old Beatles fans) would end up secretly remembering the alternative reality in which Jack became a superstar. This shared experience would ensure that Jack and Lily would retain a strong bond with one another that would keep them together happily ever after.

Oh and what was the point of having someone who was meant to be an elderly John Lennon without his thick Liverpool accent and basically nothing like Lennon's character ?
