Are we supposed to feel some kind of sympathy for Hamby?

The movie seems to be trying its best to create sympathy for this guy in certain scenes. We find out he murdered his wife and kid, and is wanted by the cops, and then we get scenes like when he's at the kids house and acting nice about everything like "Go sit with your mom, don't worry i'm not gonna hurt you". Then at the end when the mother has the gun pointed at him he's telling her to "Don't let those boys down ok?".

And i'm thinking no i don't have any sympathy for this guy, he murdered his wife and kid for seemingly no reason, he never really even says why, he just did it, yet at times we're supposed to kinda like him or feel sorry for him? fuck outta here.

Actually I think we were more supposed to feel sorry for Josh.
We know that it is not ok to not help someone who got hurt and fell into a hole.
But while the older brother did not care at all, Josh worried about the security guy and looked after him.
He was pressured the whole time that's why it is so hard to be angry at him.
