What is with these TV shows that change the costuming of the period to fit a more "contemporary" setting?
It's like the difference between Robin Hood: Prince of Thieves' costuming vs the most recent Robin Hood travesty of a movie, where the buildings looked "modern" yet medieval. I just don't get the changes.
Which Robin Hood is that latter?

But in those they are willingly going for modern in past times.
Leonardo is not doing that, it's supposed to be a faithful recreation of those times and characters, but it's just a bit ignorant.

It's slightly better than KA:LotS but yeah it's still not very good.
That version of "Robin Hood" was monumentally godawful, hilariously modernized! I mean a fucking Kung Fu master planted in Dark Ages England without explanation? Highly recommended to anyone with a bitchy, snarky, sense of humor!
But seriously, movies have almost always modernized the look of historical eras, to appeal to the contemporary audiences who'd be paying to see it. Any film geek knows that you can turn on a random historical movie from any time in the 20th century, and quickly guess it was made, by looking at the "modern" hairstyles and costumes. If TV shows do it now, they're following a proud Hollywood tradition.
Otter is quite correct. Compare the various Cleopatra films as an easy example. The period they were made in is obvious just from the cut of Cleopatra's costumes.
