My guess as to why some don't like this movie

The first 45 minutes had me sold, I was sure this was going to be one of the great ones. But then it drifted off in a direction I wasn't expecting. That's not always a bad thing, but in this case, I got annoyed with the mother-son relationship and by the end of the film I'd completely lost interest.

It's possible this is a me problem, but I've talked to many who feel the same way.

It's a solid movie. Not sure why people don't see that. Some people just don't dislike this movie though, they irrationally hate it. Weird reaction if you ask me.

reply

I know what you mean. The more subtle horror movies tend to get that reaction. Anytime a movie divides audiences, I assume there must be something interesting going on, even if I don't can't see it myself (It Follows is another example).

It Comes at Night is one that gets the most hate of all recently. I found the movie terrifying, because the people in the movie were scarier than any spirit or ghost. I really enjoyed It Comes at Night, but people get really angry that they were tricked into watching the movie. Many feel that the title and the previews were deceptive.

reply

I'll have to watch that one.

reply

Let me know what you think. I feel that the movie is scary, because it is something that could actually happen. I could easily put myself in these characters places. It was unsettling to me, but i have weird taste so go figure. lol

I really liked “ It Comes at Night “.

This movie had a good beginning but became ridiculous, not knowing in which direction to go. It also went on too long.
The son was a freakin cry baby.
Toni Collett is very good but in the second hour she was overacting.

reply

"Subtle" lol.

reply

the reason people love this movie is the actress. She's SO good and believable.
Otherwise, it's not all that great.

reply

The son was the best thing in this movie. Outstanding performance. Other performances were pretty good. Otherwise I was very underwhelmed by it.

reply

I agree with your comments. The son and the mother were great actors.. Peter Gabrielle, the husband, was in the series IN TREATMENT which was excellent, and a far cry from a thriller like this. Im not into these scary movies but the first 45 min hooked me and I saw it thru. Not my kind of flick

for me, the film is all about cinematography and art design, which are A+. But the script is unfocused, and Aster seems to care more about disturbing imagery than any disturbing concepts or ideas. Even when some of the disturbing ideas are floated, like onset dementia and family curses, the film throws them aside for random abstract imagery that, yes, looks frightening, but really means nothing and therefore is not scary. Toni Collette and Alex Wolff do great jobs tho. 6/10

I really liked that, the scene in the bedroom when she says "I never wanted to be your mother" is one of the most terrifying scenes in the movie.

reply

I can see that. I think it didn't strike me as terrifying because I'd already seen the same thing in Ordinary People!

reply

I don't know how a mother can recover from such a horrible situation. You wake up to find your daughter's decapitated body in the car your son drove home and parked.
I don't know how a son could handle seeing her go through such an emotional breakdown while dealing with the guilt of the situation as well as a demonic attack.

I'm cool with the relationship. While most focus on them, I see how the Dad is trying to keep it together. They were doomed before the movie started. But had they a choice, he was right... until the fire.

I guess I might have to watch this movie again someday.

reply

If you feel the same after watching it again, thanks for giving it a shot. If you don't watch it, I'll still respect your opinion. We can't always agree.

reply

It's very well made, but the tone of the movie and how depressed everyone is made you feel like shit after watching it with of course the icing on the cake being the girls head getting lobbed off by a telephone Pole
