Series one covers one academic year (although there seems to be a huge timeslip between halloween and the end of the school year!), two covers that summer, three covers the following autumn, four spring and five summer.
Like you say, if they're still in school now, they're at best 17, which means yas and sam were driving at 15.

The Karate Kid II came out in 1986 and KK3 came out in 1989 and both are set in 1985 as both take place right after each other. KK2 is immediately after the first one and KK3 is right after the 2nd one.
Halloween II and Kills both took place on their same nights and Friday The 13th, Parts 2-4 are set during the same weekend. Also, Harold & Kumar: Escape From Guantanamo Bay takes place right after the original one ended, similar to Halloween II/Kills.
