Well Paul Walter Hauser is an excellent actor, he didn't play the character wrong, it was just a bad character.
No way would high school kids hang out with an overweight or normal weight 35 year old loser, doesn't matter how down he tries to be.
I don't care if the character of Stingray was played by Leonardo DiCaprio, character was way too cringey.

The material was bad no doubt about it but even so it could have been less cringey with the delivery.
I can't say if Paul Walter Hauser is or isn't a good actor as not seen any of his work, but even so it his doesn't matter if he is an excellent actor, 2 actors can produce 2 different results from the same material.
Even if an actor has an oscar from one movie doesn't mean he would be great in all the rest of the movies he does.
Think of this - if Ralph Macchio was Johnny and William Zabka was Larusso, would the outcome of the films/series even look and feel the same? or if you replaced Pat Morita's character with Jet Li or Sammo Hung.
