My only problem with this series: Robby

The writing in this series was almost perfect. My only gripe is the character of Robby and I wanted to know what you guys think.

First of all, when Robby hears from his mom that Johnny was trying to make things right with him, for a brief moment, it looks like Robby wants to give his dad a chance. He shows up at Cobra Kai and sees Johnny being friendly with Miguel. This seems to make him angry again and want revenge on Johnny for some reason. I don't get it. Why does it anger him to see that his dad is being a good teacher? Jealous of Miguel? That'd be strange.

My other complaint is that Robby transitions way too fast, both in terms of his karate and in terms of his change in attitude. He turned from an angry, rebellious teenager into a kind and gentle one in the flash of an eye.

It almost seems like they forced the character of Robby into the script because they wanted the sense of irony, but he didn't seem as well-developed as the others. I mean, I love the conflict between him and Johnny, but then inserting him as also Daniel's suddenly tournament-worthy student felt rushed.

Also, actor who plays Robbie actually looks like he's been training many years, but Miguel didn't look like he could a serious punch at all LOL

reply

Agere completely. Great show, but everything about Robbie was annoying. I hope he wont be a major part of season 2.

Actually, I did not really like any of the finalists. The show could use better actors to replace them. They are never anything compared to Daniel in the trilogy.

90's cut is one of my fave's now he makes it feel like Karate Kid and the Good TV Power Rangers are in the same universe

reply

A lot of this show is based on people making assumptions and flying off the handle. So it fits in with that.

There is a fast transition but perhaps we are seeing the real Robby now and the tough guy one was the act?

reply

".. flash of an eye."

It's 'in the blink of an eye'. Eyes don't flash.

Or 'in a flash'. Take your pick, don't mix.

reply

It doesn't help that the actor playing him is terrible.

reply

I agree. He looked feminine too

It's really that haircut which is the big issue for me - he looks like a cheap Edward Furlong T2 knock off.

Kind of takes me out of the show that not one other character ever mentions it. Surely in real life it would have been brought up several times, even if just some people in the background pointing over and laughing at him.

There is a running theme in this show of people leaping to conclusions based on seeing 5 seconds of an interaction and not bothering to talk about it with the person. It is amusing really.

But it is what fuels the ongoing feuds.

reply

You're right, actually. Season 1 was all about different perspectives not only between Daniel and Johnny, but also the kids. That part works.

reply

Yeah it continues throughout the show. I am really vague on details now, I think it was in Season 2, but a couple break up because I think the guy sees something really innocent and jumps to a conclusion even starts a fight. No one talks to anyone in this show!
