The acting in this is horrific

I said it.

The main girl was insufferable and tonally it felt like every actor was reading a different version of the script. Horrible directing too.

Also, that was a clear rip off of Hans Zimmer's 'Time' score from Inception at the end.

I really couldn’t disagree more, particularly in relation to Madeleine McGraw. In fact I had the opposite reaction and thought her performance was one of the most convincing by a child actor that I have seen in a long time.

reply

Yeah. Aside from one of the kids, I thought the whole cast was great, and the sister was a standout.

reply

Absolutely! The scene where she was getting beaten by her father was so intense and visceral and could have been easily overplayed by a less talented actress but she was note perfect. Also, it was a lot to put on a young actress’s shoulders to bring levity to such a dark storyline, but she also managed that expertly, without detracting from the overall tone of the film. “Jesus, what the fuck… WHAT THE FUCK?!” had me laughing out loud, which was so unexpected in a serial killer movie.

I finished the film thinking this girl has a bright future ahead of her.

Adding my voice to you guys. Nothing negative to say about the cast of this movie. On the contrary. OP was out of track about Madeleine being insufferable. She was pretty damn convincing, especially given her age. I've seen lots of adults act worse.

reply

Yeah, her faceoff in the kitchen with Corporal Upham with the liquor bottle was so intense! Also agreed about the levity. I actually usually dislike when comic relief is inserted in serious plotlines, especially a dark one like this, without consideration of tone. But yeah, I busted up laughing too when she said that, in the movie theater. But it didn't take away from the film's atmosphere at all. It was just a very genuine reaction from a confused and desperate young girl.

she was excellent
