She was given the awkward task of surrogating for him even though he was messing around.
She wrote about the experience and how it ended their friendship in her autobiography so I am surprised this was not explored in the film. Or at least she needed to have been included as a supporting character.
Kinda important to the plot with her also being part of the State elected official delegation. Schroder had known him and Lee since 1972 and thought she had the better people skills.
