What was the point? He isn't really in it much and then just shows up very late on after everything else has happened. I just don't get how he ties in with everything else.

He was absolutely irrelevant to the story. The movie would've worked exactly the same without him. Not sure what his purpose was.

Apparently this movie was supposed to be just a satire about the art world, but a producer decided to make it a horror movie, Malkovich's character probably had a point in the original script...
