Willem Dafoe
He was wonderful in this film and deserved an academy award.
shareAgreed. I saw it last night and thought it was very good. I give it an 8.5.
shareMy initial reaction after just viewing it ....yes, I enjoyed it. As a matter of fact , I loved it ! It was as if the pages of Lust For Life came alive in front of me. Willem Dafoe was Vincent in this.
share😄 I'm glad you enjoyed it so much!
Speaking of Lust for Life (the movie), I loved that exchange between Vincent and Gauguin.
Gauguin: You paint too fast!
Vincent: You *look* too fast!
It's been quite awhile since I saw that movie. I might have to find it at the library also and make a recent comparison. Kirk Douglas was a longtime idol of mine. I do remember the intense, artistic rivalry between the artists from the book. This film also had some great dialogue and I love the title !
shareUpdate:
I had the opportunity to catch Lust for Life today on TCM which is featuring an all day tribute to Kirk Douglas. It was an enjoyable rewatch. I found myself surprised at how much of it I had forgotten.
An interesting piece of background information I gleaned from the accompanying commentary was that Douglas decided to pursue the role because a director had once commented on what a striking resemblance he bore to Van Gogh. Also emphasized was the fact that it drained him emotionally.
He was great - but way too old for the part, which bothered me.
