Over-praised because of Black Privilege

Let's face it, if this was directed by anyone else, it would've got way worse reviews. I was just watching a review by Mark Kermode who usually rips movies like this apart, but he so obviously held back. There's clearly this social pressure to overpraise everything Jordan Peele does because he's one of the few up and coming black directors.

I'm all for diversity but not when it's forced and inorganic. Get Out was good, this movie was not.

You racist!

I LIKED IT.🤔

They were both good movies. Maybe he was overpraised, I have no idea. But personally, I mean, the "hand across america" nonsense was too much but aside from that I enjoyed it a lot.

I did get this feeling myself. Especially with regards to the insane critical praise. It's ranked the #1 Horror film of all time on Rotten Tomatoes (you'll never guess what's #2...)

Baffling. There is no doubt whatsoever in my mind that if this was the exact same film but the cast and director were White Americans it would not have received such critical acclaim.

It's basically critical affirmative action.

Why don't you consider this movie good? I understand not agreeing with it being in a top 25 or 50 list, but it's considerably better than shit shows like Annabel or the Conjuring. When those are setting the bar so low, let's praise movies that are a little different like US so we don't keep getting absolute shit ones.

I thought this movie was interesting. I had no idea what anti-whitey message the racist director was promoting, but overall I thought it was a little more original than Get Out, which just seemed like a long Twilight Zone episode.

reply

What are your thoughts on the trailer for Nope?

reply

It looks interesting. Again, with Peele, there's always some racial undertone or whatever. Once he learns to let the story take center stage, vs. the politics, he might become a decent filmmaker.

reply

The film is a holy mess!! Overwrought, overlong and completely shopworn in theme (the double thing was done better, even on TV's original Twilight Zone and Alfred Hitchcock Presents).

It doesn't help that the father character is written and directed as though he were in a sitcom.

That being said, there are, what, thousands of highly over-praised films with white directors and casts (and if you don't believe me, try sitting through the horrendously bad "Being John Malcovich"). Race has nothing to do with it.

reply

True about white directors making crappy movies. The difference is, you can call out a white director for making a crappy movie and not be accused of some sort of ethereal version of racism.

reply

lol I think Get Out was overpraised. It was an okay horror movie, but just happened to be culturally relevant, and helmed by an up and coming black director.

Alternatively, I thought Us was a masterpiece.

Maybe that reviewer dude didn't hold back, and just genuinely liked a good movie.

reply

it was terrible.
