I'm as "live as you want" as they come but I wasn't crazy about either about how they wrote Darlene's son either. First, no matter what school he went to, he would have gotten picked on and possibly even an ass kicking. This is still a gendered society when it comes to (primarily) men's clothing. They want you to believe okay for him in Chicago but back in the small town filled with blue collar workers and their kids he's going to have a problem. That's much too black and white, life isn't like that and this show wasn't either.
I like how they portrayed Dan's reaction. He doesn't really get, he doesn't really like it but his love for his grandson overrides everything else. That rings true to me for a man of his generation and background.
I applaud the fact that you can have characters like Darlene's son on TV I just wish it was done in a more realistic manner.
