Just watched this on Netflix
Looked entertaining enough to give it a go, and I actually enjoyed it more than I thought I would. If you're looking for thought provoking or ground breaking sci-fi this is NOT it. If a straight action adventure - think Red Dawn, down under, with aliens - sounds like your kind of popcorn flick this is just the thing.
The enemy aliens are supposedly the same ones we know as the Roswell greys, who have been watching us for centuries. Then something went wrong on their homeworld and they had to evacuate. Say, we know another planet we could live on - let's go take it! A potentially interesting angle they never really explore. At least they're not pale and skinny little things. These versions of the classic greys are beefy and muscular.
Unfortunately for them, they're also Imperial stormtrooper level inept. Considering they have the biggest ship I've seen outside of Independence Day sitting in orbit, the damn thing must be four hundred miles across, they should've crushed the resistance. Their aircraft don't seem that much better than ours though. And despite some heavy weapons on the ground they keep getting their asses kicked by untrained townsfolk.
Lots of battles, laser guns and explosions, the heroism of ordinary people rising up against impossible odds, and a predictable but emotionally satisfying conclusion - like I said not exactly original. But for what it is, it's well paced and executed and the effects are decent. I won't pay the extra rental or purchase charge on Amazon Prime but when the sequel is available free on Netflix I'll watch it just for fun.
