I really didn't think that it was some great work of art. That it got Best Picture on top of the Best Foreign Language Film Oscar is blatantly politically motivated, and is grossly unfair to the other filmmakers.
Perhaps for some of us, living in parts of the world where this film has been doing huge business and attracting widespread audience acclaim for more than half a year now, it seems more of an event - but anyone who watched the Oscars ceremony and noted how this film's wins were received among the audience will recognise how beloved it is. Any suggestions that this is a '90-day wonder' or politically motivated win are misreading the situation. Parasite's Oscar win is based on passion, as I mentioned in my reply above. Many Oscar wins are obviously political or 'flavour of the month' but this is just a film which a lot of people love. The response to its wins has been overwhelmingly positive - I think these wins will age very well.
Well, I've seen both Parasite and 1917, and I say Sam Mendes was robbed of the Best Director award.
So far of the Oscar-nominated films I haven't seen Marriage Story, The Irishman, Ford vs. Ferrari, and Once Upon a Time in Hollywood, but I'll make an effort to see them in the next few weeks or so. But Parasite wasn't the most deserving film of the ones I've already seen, either.
As for the foreign films, I have not yet seen, but heard many good things about Pain and Glory. Well, Almodovar is always great.
I disagree, I think Bong thoroughly deserved his win. Parasite is such a rich and idiosyncratic film and he juggles tones and genres so beautifully. A true auteur.
I did enjoy 1917 a lot and Mendes did an efficient job. It moved briskly and looked great.
Pain & Glory is excellent - probably my second favourite of the year. There are several others which didn’t get within sniffing distance of the Oscars which I’d have personally nominated ahead of Mendes.
The only Best Picture contender I haven’t yet seen is Ford v. Ferrari - I couldn’t summon up any enthusiasm for it when it was on release here, but I’ll watch it eventually:
